Northern Vermont University company history timeline
Johnson State College dates to 1828 with the establishment of an elementary and secondary school in the village of Johnson.
The school was chartered in 1832 as Johnson Academy, soon afterward supported by the Lamoille County Grammar School Association.
In 1866, the Vermont Legislature designated Johnson Academy as a teacher-training school called the Johnson Normal School.
Founded in 1867, Lyndon Institute is dedicated to providing a unique educational experience for our students that leads to a lifetime of learning and good citizenship.
Lyndon Institute began in 1867 as the Lyndon Literary and Biblical Institution.

The university operates the Morgan Horse Farm, founded in Weybridge in 1878.

The school offered one-, two-, and three-year training programs until 1947, when the state approved a four-year teacher-training program, and the school became Johnson Teachers College.
The Graduate College was created in 1952.
Miss Bole, who led the school until 1955, was a driving force in the development of Lyndon State College.

Incorporated in 1961, the VSCS is a comprehensive, interconnected system of colleges made up of multiple, distinctive campuses.
While the public corporation known as the Vermont State Colleges was created by Vermont statute in 1961, the institutions were founded over a span of 200 years.
In 1962, Johnson Teachers College became Johnson State College, a year after the state Legislature created the Vermont State Colleges System.
In 1977, the Board of Trustees created a more closely aligned system of higher education.

In 2005, a new residence hall and community building, the Rita L. Bole Complex, opened, named for the longtime principal of the original teacher-training school.
In 2008, renovation of Stearns Student Center was completed, with a new performance space, a cinema and dining facilities.
In 2009, the Academic and Student Activity Center opened to house three academic departments, a student event center, and additional computer labs.
In 2012, the renovated Visual Arts Center reopened, with a new gallery, a Mac lab, and other features.
In 2017, Lyndon Institute celebrated its 150th anniversary.
Northern Vermont University officially “opened its doors” on July 1, 2018.
The merger became effective on July 1, 2018, and ended over 100 years of Lyndon's existence as a separate institution, although the combined university remains public and under the Vermont State College system.
In 2018, CPS launched Do North Coworking, a professional and creative coworking space for startup founders, remote workers, forward-thinking educators, and community leaders to be productive, build community, explore new opportunities, and network.
