MAC Cosmetics Company History Timeline
As the magazine credits racked up and word-of-mouth popularity grew, the duo launched M·A·C in March 1984 from a counter in a Toronto department store.
Two men, fashion photographer Frank Toskan and salon chain owner Frank Angelo launched their fashion forward line in Toronto in 1985 to meet the high demands of entertainment and beauty professionals.
With a small team of family members, including Toskan’s mom, the company took the next step in 1985 by opening its first public retail store in New York City’s West Village.
The first U.S M·A·C store opened in 1991, in New York.
in 1994, M.A.C. launched their very first VIVA GLAM campaign.
Part of the Estée Lauder Companies since 1994, M·A·C is sold today in over 120 countries around the world.
Other cosmetics brands took notice, too, and one year later, in 1995, the pair sold half their brand to the Estée Lauder Companies.
Five years later it opened another branch in Paris in 1996.
In 1997, co-founder Frank Angelo died of cardiac arrest during surgery at the age of 49.
Estée Lauder Inc. completed the acquisition in 1998, and Frank Toskan decided to sell his remaining shares shortly thereafter before leaving the company at the end of the same year.
