1978

When MacArthur died on January 6, 1978, he was worth in excess of a billion dollars.

1979

Program Directions (Mental Health, Parasitic Diseases, World Environment, and More): 1979-88

1980

In 1980, the foundation's grants totaled $42 million.

1981

In June 1981, the foundation announced the first 21 recipients of its 'genius' award.

By 1981, most of the original board had been replaced by members who agreed with J. Roderick MacArthur's desire to support liberal causes.

1982

In 1982, the foundation established the World Resources Institute to develop ecologically sound public policies.

1983

In 1983, the foundation began a five-year, $20 million initiative for the study of parasitic diseases.

1984

In 1984, the board sold Bankers Life and Casualty Co. to ICH Corp., a Louisville-based holding company, for a total of $482 million.

In 1984, the foundation initiated its Program on Peace and International Cooperation with the objective of increasing the understanding of the forces that lead to international conflict.

1987

By the end of 1987, the foundation had committed more than $71 million to the mental health field and was the single largest supporter of research on mental health outside the federal government.

1988

1988: Foundation's assets grow to $2.5 billion

1989

In 1989, John Corbally stepped down as president of the foundation.

1990

Adele Simmons, president of Hampshire College in Massachusetts and a native Chicagoan, assumed that post in 1990.

1991

In 1991, MacArthur joined the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Rockefeller Foundation in establishing the Energy Foundation to promote energy efficiency and alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power.

1991: Creation of MacArthur Fellows Program, the 'genius' awards; Catherine T. MacArthur dies.

1993

Things changed in 1993 when a new director was named.

1999

Total Assets: $4 billion (1999 est.)

2000

The foundation's first new initiative under its new leader was announced in April 2000, a collaboration with three other foundations to spend $100 million to support improvement of universities and academic associations in several African countries.

2002

As president (2002–03) of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, she was the first African American woman to preside as president of a state medical society.

2010

After the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010), she became chair of the National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council, which was created by the new legislation.

2011

Through that agency she oversaw the release (2011) of the “National Prevention Strategy”, an outline for a healthy lifestyle.

2013

She later launched (2013) a campaign to encourage Americans to walk, and she was a vocal advocate for breastfeeding.
