Machine shop manager job description

Madden Industrial Craftsmen is looking to fill a Senior Machine Shop Manager position for the Shipyards in N. Portland, Oregon. This person may oversee 2 locations - N. Portland, OR and Clackamas, OR. The role manages approximately 35-70 craft employees in various skills in numerous work stations in manufacturing shops.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• plan a production schedule for the job
• implement and control the production schedule
• review and adjust the schedule where needed
• determine the human resources required
• determine the material resources required
• manage human and material resources to meet production targets
• make decisions about equipment use, maintenance, modification and procurement
REQUIREMENTS:
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written for constant interaction with all departments and employee levels as well as customers
• Ability to lead, manage and motivate employees in a production environment
• Ability to lead consolidation of multiple locations into a single operation. Critical change management skills will be required.
• Must have the analytical ability to research problem areas and special requests
• Must be a well-organized, detail oriented self-starter
• Ability to read and comprehend work specifications, work orders, blueprints, contracts and technical publications (Gov’t specifications, drawings and federal requirements)
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Associates degree or equivalent work experience is required. Minimum .ten (10) years of experience in heavy industry & manufacturing. Minimum fifteen (15) years of experience in a supervisory capacity,
with increasing responsibilities. The incumbent must have experience and thorough knowledge of production procedures, government regulations, and administrative procedures within a marine program with a background in continuous process improvement. He/she must have experience and a working knowledge of all specific operations of departments, including all machinery and tools.

The shop operations manager is responsible for the management and integration of shop activities to ensure quality products are delivered as required by the business. In addition they are knowledgeable on current manufacturing technologies, evaluate those technologies for the business, and in building business cases for the investment in capital equipment with the purpose of being able to continue to provide products for Thorlabs evolving business/market as well as keeping our shop competitive as new manufacturing technologies replace existing solutions. The operations manager is also responsible for identifying and successfully implementing COGS reduction activities. They will work closely with compliance and quality to ensure that corporate goals and metrics are met. Although the location of the position is in Dulles, VA, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other ThorLabs locations.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

Manage machining, CNC programming, and maintenance staff.
Provide scheduling of all machines and staff.
Manage cutting tool selection and inventory control.
Coordinate Design, Development and Proof Out of production tooling between Manufacturing Engineering, CNC programming, Fabrication, and Quality.
Support continued compliance with ISO 9001:2000 guidelines, assist in answering corrective actions, prepare procedures, reports, and plans.
Provide and/or coordinate required technical support for all machining and CNC programming staff.
Drive process improvements to reduce set up and machine cycle times.
Oversee cross training of machinists to achieve maximum flexibility in personnel.
Responsible to know and enforce all safety and environmental regulations.
Identify and build the business case for bringing new manufacturing technology and capacity into the shop
Provide the highest level of internal and external customer service.
Ensure Periodic Maintenance program is executed and documented.
Promote unity and positive morale.
Ensure cleanliness of work areas
Understanding of business concepts such as inventory procedures, MRP, and ROI calculations
Ensure performance to meet all production and prototyping requirements of machine shop
Ensure the quality of all shop product and establish sound quality processes
Create updates and presentations as needed for Sr. Management
Qualifications

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of machine shop management experience
Education

Bachelor's degree preferred
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

Experienced with CNC programming
Experience in machining close tolerance components
Strong interpersonal, organization and management skills
Knowledge of all department positions and requirements
Knowledge of existing processes and procedures to ensure process and productivity improvement
Knowledge of machining a variety of materials such as aluminum, high performance alloys, bronze, brass and delrin.
Has machine tool knowledge with precision grinders, mills and lathes
Familiar with CAD/CAM packages (Gibbs )

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Machine Shop / Facilities Manager is responsible for the overall running and day to day operation of the machine shop and facilities including organization and management of personnel, assignment of duties, scheduling of work, programming jobs, determination of required tooling, ordering of supplies and general organization of the shop.

• Hiring and management of machine shop personnel
• Organization of work flow through the machine shop
• Assignment of duties to machine shop personnel

• Organization of programs, drawings and other related documents for each job
• Design and maintenance/organization of tooling as needed
• Perform and/or oversee CNC programming as required
• Work with engineering on design for manufacturing
• Maintain CMMS program

• Work with outside services and internal personnel on facility repair and upkeep

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 5+ years CNC mill and lathe programming required. Trade School, College Certificates and/or Degrees in Manufacturing Technology and CNC Programming are preferred. Experience managing machine shop personnel. In-depth knowledge of milling and turning. Familiar with Haas controls. Must be familiar with geometric tolerancing. Must have experience with tight tolerance parts. Experience machining various types of materials.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm.
