Position Summary
The OFAD instrument shop provides professional instrument construction for research endeavors at UO. This position interacts with faculty, staff, postdocs, graduate students, and other research professionals both within and outside of the University. The Instrument Machinist in the shop provides design consultation services and operates a variety of standard and specialized equipment to create and assemble instruments for research use. This position performs manual machining, CNC programming, CNC turning, CNC milling, waterjet cutting, laser cutting/etching, sheet metal fabrication, plastic fabrication, additive manufacturing, and other related duties as assigned. The person in this position will need to understand the scientific purpose of the materials they are manufacturing and work closely with the researcher to build custom parts, often from scratch, with frequent modifications.
The instrument machinist (IM) provides their technical skills, inventiveness, spatial reasoning, and creative abilities to the design, engineering, prototyping, and fabrication of research instrumentation for the advancement of research excellence on the University of Oregon campus. The IM provides their expertise to principal investigators and graduate students within the campus community to develop custom equipment requirements for proposed or ongoing grant submissions. The IM assists in the diagnosis and repair of existing research apparatus by researching, troubleshooting, and designing repairs. The IM occasionally assists and trains graduate students and undergrads associated with department labs in the use of diagnostic and fabrication equipment housed in the UO's research instrumentation shops.
Minimum Requirements
• Two years experience in machine shop practice.
• Bachelor's degree in a technical science or engineering plus two years of experience with machining, OR Associate's Degree in a technology field plus at least three years of experience related to machining or fabrication; OR equivalent combination of training and experience.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Included, but not limited to:
Load and unload parts for machining up to 40 pounds.
Read and interpret manufacturing prints.
Possess efficient math skills and basic understanding of geometric tolerance.
Check parts using basic measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, pins, indicators and bore gauges.
CNC setup and operation; tech tools, load programs and set/adjust work/tool offsets accordingly. Haas, Fanuc, Siemens, and Okuma controls.
Inspect machined parts following 1st Part and in process inspection protocol.
Must have CNC 3 & 4 axis machining experience. 5 axis is a plus.
Able to change fixtures, replace tool changes and manage tool libraries.
Machining and holding tolerances of +/- .0005".
5s, keeping area clean and organized.

What You'll Do:
• Ensure that safe work practices are followed and adhered to.
• Check production schedule or shop request list and plan work tasks.
• Study blueprints, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, setup requirements, and check for errors.
• Accurately measures, numbers, identifies dimensions, and reference points on material for fabrication or other work cells for further machining as necessary.
• Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines as necessary to machine parts as required.
• Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth, and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media according to established guidelines and procedures.
• Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
• Inspect finished workpiece(s) to blueprints, quality standards, exact tolerances, using measuring and inspection tools as necessary.
• Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data to process steel (some pieces weighing as much as 300 lbs).
• Consults with engineers, production management, programmers, or others to resolve machining or programming problems.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and maintain all equipment, to like-new appearance, according to maintenance plans and established procedures.
• Assist with directing work activities of any support staff as necessary (forklift operator, CNC machine trainees, and/or material handlers).

Job Description
The CNC Machinist has in-depth knowledge of the both operation of machines as well as the knowledge to take design demands and turn the concept into the required customer demanded item/part. The job typically requires 5+ years of combined formal training and experience, or equivalent. Requires a broad knowledge of machining techniques and familiarity with computer numerically controlled machine tool operating procedures. Setups involve familiarity with and understanding of program formats involving combinations of operations such as profile and contour milling, boring, recessing, turning, drilling, threading, etc., to the capacity of the machine and control factor. Performs advanced setup operations, adjusts and checks out programming and operates numerically controlled machine tools to perform a complex series of progressive machining operations on a diversified line of work to close and exacting tolerances and finish specifications requiring a high degree of skill. May set up machines for and instruct other operators. Check parts for conformance to specifications. Operators may run more than one unit simultaneously.
Qualifications
Must have 5+ years of combined formal training and experience.
Trained to operate all CNC machine tools in shop
Knowledge and ability to read and use G & M code at the control
Ability to read and understand GD&T Tolerances
