Job Summary: As a Machine Operator for H&S, you'll be setting up and operating Boring Mills, Lathes, Hobbing, and Grinding Machines to machine industrial gearing parts to specific tolerances. The operator is responsible for operating controls, setting offsets, editing programs, some deburring, and performing self-inspection of parts in-process and upon completion for conformance to requirements. The Operator will also use large overhead cranes and other large equipment. Primary responsibilities: Operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to produce metal parts. Review electronic or written blueprints or specifications for a job. Calculate where to cut or bore. Shape steel, aluminum, titanium, plastic, silicon and other materials. Mark the work piece to show where cuts should be made. Position work piece on the drill press, lathe, or milling machine. Monitor and control feed rate and speed. Ensure work piece is properly lubricated and/or cooled. Regulate temperature of work piece. Detect problems by listening for specific sounds. Adjust cutting speed to compensate for harmonic vibrations. Monitor the accuracy of cuts. Replace dull cutting tools. Check accuracy of work against blueprints and specifications. Qualifications and Experience Minimum of five years' experience on CNC Horizontal Boring Mills, Lathes, and Grinders, and proficiency with large-part machining and blueprint reading; with the understanding of geometric tolerancing and dimensioning. CNC programming experience a plus. Must be able to perform own setups, measure parts that consistently result in precision quality parts. Large overhead crane experience and move large work pieces. Must be able to edit G and M-codes, trouble shoot jobs and make adjustments as required. Strong shop mathematics (trigonometry) aptitude and the ability to use precision measuring instruments (calipers, mics and other gauges). Must have the ability to use a feed and speed chart or calculator to determine appropriate feeds, speeds, and depths of cut. Understanding of metal properties and appropriate cutting tools. Positive attitude required; dependable, self-starter and the willingness to help others. Ability to work in a large manufacturing environment and performs well with minimal supervision. 2nd shift opportunity Builds tool and dies from part prints, sketches, reference parts, or instructions. Operates tool room machinery in a safe and productive manner during the build process. Performs tool and die repairs on progressive dies, manually operated dies, and tooling. Diagnose and trouble shoot dies in the bench area and make corrections. Work from T.C.O. program reports and last piece references to make corrections as required to produce quality parts. Support press room operations by servicing die sets, trouble shoot dies and make corrections when possible with die in the press, and through using SPC data to determine dimensional integrity for die adjustments and document. Interface with both internal and external customers, participate on problem solving teams in production, and handle customer and supplier concerns. Initiate, recommend, or provide solutions through designated channels. Support MOS and safety programs. Also responsible for practicing good housekeeping standards. Performs other essential functions as assigned. Requirements Prefer high school diploma or the equivalent and completion of a certified 4-year apprenticeship program in die making and/or tool die making. Tool and Die Makers must be able to stand on the concrete floor for the duration of work shift, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, bend to the floor, and use arms and hands. Visual precision is needed for visually inspecting parts for quality at production equipment speed, and for reading documents, machine gauges, and precision measuring instruments. Tool and Die Makers must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and repetitively lift up to 35 pounds from and to a height of 10-56 inches for the work shift. A day in this role You start by reviewing the job traveler and drawings, confirming materials, spacing, and dimensions for the grating you'll build. You set up your station, select the right wire, rods, and settings, and execute precise welds to meet tight tolerances. Between assemblies, you'll rig and move panels using overhead and jib cranes, keep production flowing across different lines, and complete accurate paperwork to keep inventory in check. Throughout the shift, you perform light preventive maintenance, help teammates troubleshoot welds and fits, and maintain a clean, organized area to ensure safety and quality. Core responsibilities Transform basic drawings into finished grating assemblies, performing straightforward fabrications such as straight and band cuts, applying nosing and toe plates, and installing anchor blocks. Alternatively, you can set up and weld all configurations of heavy-duty, hand-welded grating. Consistently meet established quality standards and productivity targets. Own the layout, fit-up, and welding of grating product lines per job orders and prints, including verification of material type and spacing. Work effectively in a largely self-directed setting with limited supervision. Safely operate overhead and jib cranes to lift, move, and position grating panels. Use power tools safely and skillfully, including saws (band, cold, table), presses, grinders, cutting torches, routers, and welding equipment. Accurately complete job paperwork and time reporting to support inventory management. Perform routine equipment care and identify when maintenance or repairs are required. Troubleshoot welding and fabrication issues and support other business units as needed. Shift between production lines based on demand and priorities. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Hands-on experience with MIG and Stick welding; capable with oxy/fuel and plasma cutting on carbon steel, stainless steel, and/or aluminum. Familiarity with AWS codes such as D1.1, D1.5, and/or D1.2; certification out of position is expected. Proficient with a wide range of hand and power tools and safe overhead crane operation. Blueprint reading and interpretation skills; able to understand both metric and standard tape measures. Solid math: add/subtract two-digit numbers; multiply/divide by 10s and 100s without a calculator; work with whole numbers and fractions in both metric and standard units. Team-oriented with strong communication. Preferred: 2-4 years of fabrication training/experience; 2-4 years with a steel, stainless, or aluminum manufacturer; and 1-2 years of overhead crane experience.
