Position Summary
The primary function of the Equipment Technician II to provide technical and advisory support for engineering laboratory equipment and student/faculty research projects and assist with demonstration equipment.
Under general supervision of the supervising Equipment Technician III, the incumbent of this Machinist position with independent application of knowledge and experience, prepares laboratories for instruction, including equipment installation, maintenance, minor repair, and modification, in all cases employing a comprehensive knowledge of both scientific and technical principles.
This position provides laboratory preparation, equipment repair, modification, design, fabrication, and installation support services on various classes of complex and highly technical engineering-related equipment and systems in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) as well as providing direct technical support to the various student activity groups within the college.
The incumbent is responsible for preparing equipment designs from oral directions or from discussions of what functions or processes are needed in relation to student, research, or instruction needs; developing unique equipment of a specialized nature to assist students and faculty; developing experimental models, systems and devices; repairs and maintains the most complex factory built or prototype equipment. Incumbent acts as a resource to faculty and students in developing equipment capability for research; develops models to demonstrate theoretical and practical engineering principles; develops plans, specifications, and construction drawings; acts as a resource to provide advice regarding suitable makes, models and accessories; adapts complex donated equipment or one-of-a-kind equipment for which there are no manuals or resources available to make it viable as instructional equipment. The incumbent performs highly skilled repairs in maintaining complex factory-built or custom engineering lab equipment, systems and devices. The incumbent develops plans, methods and techniques for analyzing and diagnosing equipment malfunctions. The incumbent serves as a consultant on special projects and provides the technical expertise needed to successfully complete the project. The incumbent performs duties with a high degree of independence and judgement and is responsible for maintaining and contributing the highest level of service quality to the ECS Tech Shop in support of ECS operations.
FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,595 per month (Step 1) - $5,828 per month (Step 13)
Salary step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience.

Ability to perform complex troubleshooting; ability to design, fabricate, modify, and repair technical equipment of the specialty assignment following original or suggested plans; ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed; ability to install, place, and maintain a wide variety of equipment related to the area of job assignment ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position, ability to make arithmetic computations where required.

Equivalent to two years of journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned such as mechanical, electromechanical, electronics or in the specialized category including construction and fabrication and some precision work or requiring trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials.
Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair for one year of the required experience.
Required Qualifications
Experience using mechanical and thermal test equipment and/or automated machine tools, including preparation of laboratory materials, including installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
Experience using computers and computer peripherals, including basic office and graphics software.
Experience working with a diverse student population in support of courses and student projects.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Strong ability to operate and perform routine troubleshooting and maintenance of engineering laboratory equipment, such as: survey instruments, data acquisition and control systems, computer integrated manufacturing, welding (MIG, TIG, oxy-acetylene, stick-arc, brazing), sheet metal fabrication, foundry work (melting and pouring metals, pattern making, green sand casting), model making, tensile and compression testing, hydraulic systems, wood working, and HVAC operations.
Must have knowledge of (or ability to learn) proper acquisition, handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials and the ability to maintain safety records;
Ability to keep abreast of industry trends and technology; ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; ability to make mathematical calculations where required.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing, including spelling and punctuation.
Ability to interpret, communicate, and apply knowledge of University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
To perform machining tasks as directed by their supervisor utilizing the CNC Vertical Milling Center (main responsibility), Bridgeport Mill, Engine Lathe and CNC Lathe as well as other Machine Shop support equipment (i.e. grinder, belt sander, cold saw, etc.).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Updates set-up and tooling sheets as required, maintaining the VMC logbook for shift turnover, documenting travelers and Discrepant Materials Report (DMR).
Supports and exhibits the focus of zero defects as well as right-the-first-time attitude.
Inspects work utilizing basic inspection equipment (calipers, micrometers, depth gage, etc.).
Provides suggestions or advice to maximize the efficiency of Machine Shop.
Maintains a clean work area and ensures strict adherence to the 5S Standards.
Accurately adjusts machine settings to complete tasks according to specifications.
Uses various machine shop support equipment including Saws, Belt Sanders, Grinders, Overhead Cranes and Drill Press.

Position Summary

The incumbent is responsible for preparing equipment designs from oral directions or from discussions of what functions or processes are needed in relation to student, research, or instruction needs; developing unique equipment of a specialized nature to assist students and faculty; developing experimental models, systems and devices; repairs and maintains the most complex factory built or prototype equipment. Incumbent acts as a resource to faculty and students in developing equipment capability for research; develops models to demonstrate theoretical and practical engineering principles; develops plans, specifications, and construction drawings; acts as a resource to provide advice regarding suitable makes, models and accessories; adapts complex donated equipment or one-of-a-kind equipment for which there are no manuals or resources available to make it viable as instructional equipment. The incumbent performs highly skilled repairs in maintaining complex factory-built or custom engineering lab equipment, systems and devices. The incumbent develops plans, methods and techniques for analyzing and diagnosing equipment malfunctions. The incumbent serves as a consultant on special projects and provides the technical expertise needed to successfully complete the project.
