The CNC Machinist III supports the Prototype and Manufacturing Division (PMD) machine shop at Lakehurst. The Prototype and Manufacturing Division provides critical hardware to the fleet. We overhaul arresting engines and launch valves and are the sole source of supply for the cables used for aircraft arrestment (i.e., purchase cables and cross deck pendants), we manufacture hardware in response to fleet emergencies, and we manufacture a wide range of support equipment and test this equipment appropriately. We are the sole source of supply and last source of supply for critical hardware that is essential to Navy Fleet operations. PMD produces a large range of machined components from small components approximately one inch in size to large frames and equipment bases that are over 30 feet long. BASIC FUNCTION: Design, build, and inspect jigs, fixtures, and dies in accordance with Product Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering requirements by performing the following duties. SPECIFIC & ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Inspect parts made in fabrication or welding that are produced off of new tooling to determine conformity to specification. Evaluate and critique part print specifications to ensure manufacturability of desired part. Inspect tools, jigs, fixtures and gauging devices for proper orientation and processing. Examine and inspect all types of parts, subassemblies, assemblies and finished products for dimensional, fit and function or evaluation of defects as assigned by supervisor. Layout, plan and perform all bench and machine operations to construct, alter and repair tools, dies, fixtures, jigs and gages requiring skill and knowledge of tooling practices and application. Perform close and exacting bench operations to fit, assemble, adjust, align, and finish work. Design, fabricate and repair a wide variety of material handling equipment. Studies specifications, eng. blueprints, tool orders, and shop data and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, mfg procedures, and cost in assembly. Train operators on the use of fixtures, inspection equipment, and procedures. Assist in the design of assembly lines and work stations. Assist in the design of prototype parts for manufacturability Order all tool room inventory, clamps, drills, material, and fasteners etc. Perform other related duties as deemed necessary by the Supervisor. Assist in the installation and removal of Assembly lines (boom cranes, roller tables, scissor lifts, and gantry hoist systems etc.) EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma with basic mathematical skills required Requires the use of fairly complicated drawings, mathematics, handbook formulas, and variety of precision measuring instruments. Experience in blueprint reading and CAD Programming experience for machine tools and EDM required, Laser programming preferred 5-10 years experience in metal fabrication or machining required Must be mechanically minded with a strong desire to learn and to accept new challenges PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The ideal candidate will be responsible for setting up repeat work and/or setting up new parts for multi-axis CNC lathes and/or Swiss CNC lathes. This position requires a solid understanding of machining processes, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining production efficiency and quality standards. Key Responsibilities Set up, program offsets, and operate multi-axis CNC lathes to produce precision parts according to engineering specifications and blueprints. Select, install, and align tooling, fixtures, and work holding devices. Read and interpret detailed blueprints, GD&T specifications, and setup sheets. Verify machine setups through trial runs and first-piece inspections. Make necessary offsets, tool changes, and adjustments to maintain part quality and dimensional accuracy. Perform precision inspections using micrometers, calipers, indicators, bore gauges, and other measuring tools. Troubleshoot Machining or quality issues and recommend process improvements. Collaborate with engineers and production team members to optimize programs and machining efficiency. Maintain clean, safe, and organized work environment; perform basic machine maintenance as required. Accurately document production data, setup parameters, and inspection results. Mentor machine operators and perform other duties as assigned in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation. Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and best practices. Complete job-related training as directed by management. Qualifications Minimum 5 years of experience in CNC machining, with a focus on CNC lathe setup and operation. Strong experience with multi-axis and live-tooling CNC lathes (e.g., Doosan). Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, G-code, and geometric tolerancing (GD&T). Solid understanding of cutting speeds, feeds, tooling, and materials(steel, aluminum, exotic alloys, etc.). Experience in Lights Out manufacturing processes preferred. Skilled in using precision measurement instruments and inspection methods. Ability to work independently, manage multiple setups, and maintain tight production schedules. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and quality focus. Excellent communication skills and teamwork mindset. Ability to meet physical demands of the job, including but not limited to frequent standing and walking; frequent kneeling; bending; lifting or moving up to 50 lbs. Ability to understand prints and engineering drawings with knowledge of basic algebra, geometry/trigonometry concepts along with an understanding of geometric tolerancing. Physical Requirements Manual dexterity and visual acuity for precision work. Comfortable working in a production environment with machinery, lubricants, and metal materials.
