Job Description
Machinists are responsible for the set up and operation of all machining equipment. They use hand tools to fabricate, assemble, and repair plant equipment. They fabricate, repair and maintain tools, fixtures, and dies; grinds and sharpens machine tools and cutters.
The Machinists essential functions include:
* Reads and interprets blueprints, charts, and sketches.
* Knows shop mathematics and plans, layout materials and sketches lines to be cut, shaped, milled, drilled, or otherwise machined.
* Sets up and operates machines to fabricate and repair parts within very close tolerances.
* Does assembly work such as; washes, steam cleans, inspects and repairs by using various tools and equipment.
* Knows the mechanical properties of various materials.

* Uses computer to update work orders as needed and to order or return material or parts to Kaisers Storeroom.
* Keeps required files and records.
* Assists other maintenance crafts, production employees, salaried employees, or contractors /vendors as needed to do job assignment.
* Maintains machine shop equipment by tool sharpening, equipment and tool repairs.
* PMs Machines, daily pre-op checks on mobile equipment, oils and greases all department stationary and mobile equipment as needed.
Other functions can include
* Silver soldering.
* Heat treats, tempers, draws, and case hardens metal alloys.
* Dresses and changes abrasive wheels and emery belts, etc.
* Layout and sheet metal forming.
* Non-critical welding and cutting torch work as needed to do job assignment.
Degree or technical education is preferred.
* A minimum of 5 years' combined (including school) experience as a journey level industrial repair machinist
* Be energetic, disciplined and focused on a team building operational organization
* Have well developed interpersonal and business partnering skills, with the ability to quickly adapt to, be accepted by, and communicate with the organization at all levels

This is a part-time, temporary position intended to support instructional and fabrication needs within the Engineering & Physics Department. This appointment is temporary and is not eligible for university benefits, including health insurance or paid vacation and holiday time off. In accordance with Washington State law, employees in this role will accrue sick leave at a rate of one (1) hour for every forty (40) hours worked. SUMMARY: The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for following prescribed standards of CNC operations, meeting cycle times, promoting on-time delivery through their performance efforts, demonstrating knowledge and application of lean manufacturing, promoting teamwork through their behavior, acting in accordance with Altek's Policies and adhering to the goals and expectations as defined by management.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Follows prescribed standards of CNC Lathe operations and set-ups of established processes
Pays strong attention to detail, exhibits critical thinking skills and meets the cycle times set forth
Takes an active role in organizing and improving current processes through SWI change suggestions
Is proactive in maintaining established company policies and manufacturing strategies
Sets up equipment to run production and/or prototype parts according to blueprints
Develops new work instructions for prototype parts
Troubleshoots processes, programs, equipment and tooling
Performs shop floor programming and editing of CNC programs to maintain product quality
Inspects product according to Altek's Quality Policies and Procedures
Builds and maintains positive rapport, communication and behavior with other Altek employees, customers and/or suppliers
Adapts and modifies as circumstances warrant

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILTIES:

QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED
CNC Machining Certificate preferred
Minimum of 7 years in CNC Lathe setup and machining
Experience with various machine tool controls (G-M Codes & Mazatrol a plus)
Quality-conscious attitude and pride of ownership in designated responsibilities
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Ability to accurately read blueprints
Skilled with portable measuring devices used in the production processes at Altek
Must be able to read and comply with work instructions, quality documents, and other pertinent written materials
Working knowledge of GD&T and calculating
Working knowledge of mathematical formulas needed to calculate product dimensioning
Knowledge and skills to pre-stage raw material, perform setups, conduct tool changes, run product and make tool off-sets for proven processes
Must have a reasonably complete set of personal tools to perform set-ups
