Our story began in 1927 with Bob Jones Sr., a well-known American evangelist with a burden for Christian education.
A Scottsboro native and University of Alabama law school graduate, the conservative Democrat entered politics in 1940 when he was elected judge in Jackson County.
John Sparkman resigned in 1946 to run for the United States Senate, Jones won a special election to replace him.
In 1947, the two schools—Bob Jones Academy and Bob Jones University—moved to Greenville, SC, where the Academy gained its own facilities, an increasing enrollment, and a growing number of dedicated faculty members.
Bob Jones High School opened in 1974 at 1304 Hughes Road as a part of the Madison County School system.
He remained in Congress until retiring in 1977, gaining a reputation for supporting major public works projects such as the interstate highway system and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
In 1996 BJHS moved to a newly constructed building at 650 Hughes Road, leaving the previous building for Discovery Middle School.
Bob Jones High School opened in 1974 at 1304 Hughes Road as a part of the Madison County School system. It remained a part of this system until 1998, when the Madison City Schools system was created.
When a second high school, James Clemens High School, was opened in 2012, the 9th grade was then moved back to the high schools.
