Madison High School company history timeline

1826

Gurley did not become a part of Madison County until 1826.

1860

There was some type of school before 1860 but no records have been found to that effect.

1893

The Robert Donnell school was completed Aug 1 1893.

Classes began in the fall of 1893.

1899

He began teaching in the public schools of Russell County in 1899.

1902

Robert Donnell Academy 1902 Terry D. Lee volunteer and webmaster for the Madison Co.

1907

In 1907 he was elected principal of the R. D. H. S. School, and after the establishment of the Madison County High School here our people desiring to secure the ablest educators to he had selected him as first Principal of that institution, which position he now holds.

1908

In 1908 the Robert Donnell Academy was transferred to the state and it became the first accredited school in Madison County.

1927

In 1927 the Seattle school board purchased the West Seattle site from William Sieverts and Earl King for $22,543.00.

1928

In 1928 construction on the newest intermediate school began, tentatively called West Seattle Intermediate School, and later renamed for James Madison.

1934

The first gymnasium was built in 1934.

1936

The building described above was used until 1936, when it was torn down and the present high school was built.

The first annual Memories was published in 1938.

1950

The first cafeteria was built in 1950.

1952

Madison Elementary has grown since it opened in 1952.

1954

The new Home Economics and Vocational Agricultural buildings were built in 1954.

1966

A larger and more modern cafeteria was built in 1966.

1967

The first kindergarten was established in 1967.

1976

in honor of Adcox who died on February 24, 1976.

1977

The largest class in 1977 with 102 graduates.

1979

It was named in honor of H. G. Solley, who died June 17, 1979.

Later in 1979 when Big Cove School closed, a four-room pod

Carlotta Outley Brown is a product of HISD schools where she was a proud graduate of James Madison High School in 1979.

1991

She has been a part of the HISD family since 1991.

1992

In July 1992, she became HISD’s Director of Grant Writing.

Warner D. Ervin, former Principal of Ryan Middle School, became the Principal at Madison in July 1992.

1995

Madison became a magnet school for Meteorology and Space Science in 1995 with a partnership with Channel 2.

1997

In 1997 Madison received a grant from business partner, General Electric for $250,000 for a College Bound Program.

2005

In July of 2005, Principal Brown was named Principal of Lora B. Peck Elementary.

2010

Sonja C. Williams became Principal of Madison High School in July 2010.

2014

Orlando Reyna became the Principal of Madison High School in 2014.

2017

Paolo Castagnoli became Principal of Madison High School in 2017.

2019

Principal Brown fulfilled her lifelong dream, when she was named the Principal of her Alma Mater, James Madison High School in 2019.
