MADRE company history timeline

1983

In 1983, a group of women activists, poets, teachers, artists and health professionals traveled to Nicaragua to witness the impact of the US-sponsored Contra War.

1988

In 1988, Getty and the City of L.A. began the process of conserving América Tropical, a mural by Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros, high on a wall overlooking historic Olvera Street.

1990

Weighing in at more than 250 tons, the vine was in the 1990 Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest blooming plant.

She propelled Kathy's crucial work forward, serving as MADRE's Executive Director for over 20 years beginning in 1990.

2007

Sierra Madre’s treasured Wistaria Vine is slated to enter the book again in 2007 with the same honor.
