Summary
This entry-level position is responsible for real-time monitoring and the safe, reliable operation of Xcel Energy's Electric Distribution System in SD, ND, and MN. Working alongside the SR DSO and completing all training checkoffs, the DSO will learn all aspects of the requirements for successfully operating the Distribution System. The DSO has authority to perform necessary actions to maintain the electric distribution system, including executing switch plans within its jurisdiction.
Essential Responsibilities
* Assess all outages and emergencies, develop service restoration and emergency response plans, and direct their implementation. Document restoration data and review elements of the process for improvement opportunities.
* Monitor and operate the Electric Distribution System using various technologies, including, but not limited to, ADMS, OMS, SCADA, DEMS, and other systems. This includes future upgrades and changes to technology infrastructures. Address customer concerns and resolutions, including issues related to government and community electric services.
* Review, approve, and direct system switching plans and procedures using the appropriate system(s). Prepare emergency switching requests and procedures. Perform Switching Authority duties and responsibilities for all work under their jurisdiction (NSP-Minnesota).
* Prioritize outages, emergency response requests, and non-outage service orders, and dispatch them to appropriate field personnel. Assign work to Substation Operators, Troublemen, District Reps, and others to meet workload requirements directed and managed by the relevant division(s).
* Initiate and respond courteously and efficiently to major customer telephone calls regarding outages and other service concerns. Answer fire, police, and other public authority emergency calls and respond with company resources accordingly. As required, communicate with internal management on the effects of customer outages and emergencies.
* Monitor work directions to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the distribution system, balancing the needs for service reliability and response with cost-effective practices.
* Maintain a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Electric Distribution System infrastructure, systems, and practices through appropriate training as assigned by management. Participate in any training or drills designed to enhance expertise and assist others in expanding overall performance in ensuring safe, effective, and efficient operation. Participate in and successfully complete all required training.

Qualified candidates will have a High School Diploma or GED and meet all of the following criteria:
* To be considered for hire, you must successfully complete the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) System Operator/Power Dispatching (SOPD) screening test.
* Demonstrated knowledge of the electric distribution system's design, operation, maintenance, and performance.
* Two years of post-secondary training in electricity or electric distribution AND five years of experience in electric utility operations; OR completion of an Xcel or equivalent Lineman apprenticeship AND three years of Lineman/Troubleman experience; OR four years of an Engineering degree AND three years of experience in electric utility distribution.
* Must be able to work rotating shifts, overtime, extension of shifts, and respond to emergency calls to return to work.
* Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills and computer skills.
* The ability to problem solve and understand contractual work rules related to dispatching appropriate employees based upon the current needs of ensuring the reliable Electric Distribution System.

In this role you will get to:
Leadership & Strategy
Lead, mentor, and manage a distributed team of HSE professionals across North America.
Execute a comprehensive HSE strategy aligned with company goals and regulatory requirements.
Serve as the primary HSE subject matter expert for HSE team and site management teams.
Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and applicable Canadian regulations
Oversee audits, inspections, and corrective action plans across all locations.
Maintain and update company-wide HSE policies and procedures in alignment with changing regulations.
Program Management
Implement and maintain standardized safety programs, training materials, and systems across all sites.
Lead initiatives in incident prevention, emergency preparedness, and risk reduction.
Manage environmental programs related to air, water, and waste, including permitting, emissions tracking, and sustainability reporting.
Provide manufacturing & engineering technical input into process hazard studies and capital projects ensuring safety is at the forefront of processes & projects.
Assist in the development of the HSE budget for the site.
Attend site management and department meetings on regular basis and upon request.
Performance & Reporting
Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure HSE effectiveness and continuous improvement.
Prepare and present regular reports to executive leadership on HSE metrics, incidents, and risk areas.
Support root cause analysis for significant incidents and ensure proper follow-up actions.
Culture & Engagement
Promote a proactive safety culture focused on employee engagement, behavior-based safety, and accountability.
Partner with HR and Operations to develop training and communication plans that reinforce EHS values.
Job Requirements:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Health, Safety, Environmental or related field
Minimum 7-10 years of HSE experience in a multi-site manufacturing environment
Minimum 3 years in role leading HSE team members
In depth knowledge of U.S. regulations, and industry best practices
Experience managing cross-functional teams and driving organization change across multiple locations
Strong ability to communicate in written and oral formats with diplomacy and tact
Strong analytical and project management skills
Competent in using Microsoft Office products and systems
Ability to travel up to 50% to visit sites as needed
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated success in teaching others health and safety concepts and requirements
Professional certification as CSP
An aptitude for exercising independent thinking and reasoning
Previous success in working effectively in a cross functional environment
Skilled in leading others without formal reporting authority
Flexibility to work extended or later hours periodically to support second and third shifts
Ability to communicate in Spanish as a second language preferred

The majority of Electrical Engineering co-ops and interns enter into the following positions:
Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Project Engineers work on a variety of real-world electrical and instrumentation projects in a refinery setting. During your time at MPC, you will develop and utilize project management skills including scope alignment, cost and schedule development, and teamwork through multiple engineering phases. You will also support the area teams. We are committed to developing engineers into professional project managers who successfully manage projects of all sizes.
Reliability Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Engineers troubleshoot Electrical & Instrumentation issues at the refinery. As a reliability intern, you will help analyze failures of equipment, develop solutions for recurring equipment difficulties, submit Project Request Forms (PRF's) to implement solutions, and understand equipment maintenance strategies. There will be opportunities to use electrical analysis software to solve coordination issues and run Arc Flash studies for the power system, as well as learning and understanding about how our critical Refinery Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) are applied.
Process Control / Technical Service Engineers can work on a wide array of projects in support of the process control systems installed throughout the refinery and products movements areas. The process control systems in the refinery provide real-time control and data acquisition functions in support of operating the refinery process and electrical equipment. Typical college co-op assignments include the following: troubleshooting system power supply problems, control system programming, hardware and software lifecycle replacement projects, installing and troubleshooting communication networks and monitoring control system performance metrics.

+ Strong academic performance
+ Candidates must be authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.
