MMG Insurance history

1978: Maine Mutual merged with the United Mutual Insurance Company.

1980: Maine Mutual began operating in Vermont.

1984: Maine Mutual began operating in New Hampshire.

1988: With premium volume having reached $20 million, the company had outgrown its home on Main Street in Presque Isle.

Termed “a Maine Miracle” in an editorial published in the Portland Press Herald, MEMIC was, and remains, the keystone to the landmark 1992 reforms of Maine workers' compensation law passed by the Maine Legislature and signed by then Gov.

Since MEMIC's formation in 1993, lost-time injuries in its home state have been reduced by 50 percent.

And, while the company was under no obligation to return this capital, in 1998 it began returning this capital to its policyholders.

In 2000, MEMIC formed MEMIC Indemnity Company, a subsidiary based in Manchester, New Hampshire.

By 2001, MEMIC had approved the return of the entire amount to all eligible policyholders and then began issuing annual dividends.

2002: The company completed its transformation into a mutual holding company and began operating under its previous name, Maine Mutual Group.

2005: The company began marketing its services under the name MMG Insurance to reflect its expanding footprint outside the state of Maine.

2006: MMG Insurance began operating in the state of Pennsylvania.

2007: MMG is named the Best Place to Work in Maine among companies with fewer than 200 employees.

In 2008, MEMIC became the first company to introduce Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) as an endorsement to its workers’ compensation policies.

2011: MMG Insurance began operating in the state of Virginia.

In 2012, MEMIC acquired a Vermont-based insurer and created MEMIC Casualty Company to provide greater flexibility in pricing.

2014 Ward’s 50 Top Performing P&C Insurers — Ward Group (award details)

2015 Company of the Year – Maine Insurance Agents Association

In addition to its corporate office in Portland, Maine, the group maintains offices in Manchester, NH; Glastonbury, CT; Albany, NY; Weehawken, NJ; West Conshohocken, PA; Tysons Corner, VA; and Tampa, FL. In 2016, the premium written outside of Maine exceeded its instate writings.

2017 Named One of the Best Places to Work in Maine – Best Places to Work in ME Survey

By 2018, the company had issued dividends and capital return of more than $263 million to its policyholders.
