ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: * Plans and prepares electrical tasks to be efficient, effective, and safe. * Proficient in wiring and conduct installations, modifications, and repairs. * Practices superior workmanship that focuses on safety, reliability, and ongoing maintainability. * Proficient using modern test equipment to determine safe conditions, nominal operating conditions, and failed components. * Tests and reviews repaired components and connections for correct configuration before energizing them to avoid damage. * Make sure that all wiring and components are consistent with specifications and local electrical codes. * Reviews, troubleshoots, and corrects control software programming in PLC's or other electronic controllers. * Creates and documents controller programming for new processes. * Prepares new, or modifies, drawings and diagrams on documents that illustrate current condition(s) of equipment electrical wiring and components. * Supports and champions preventive maintenance and repairs practices to maximize equipment safety, reliability, and operational availability. * Inspect, diagnose, and repair failed electrical components. * Works with Journeylevel Maintenance Mechanic to train other maintenance personnel. * Connects/disconnects power and control sources to equipment to assist other trades. * Observes and monitors conditions of operational equipment, or system, to detect anomalies that indicate a need for adjustments or replacement. * Install, modify, and maintain telecommunication and data systems in facility. * Provides general maintenance support when needed. SPECIAL SKILLS: * Ability to read and understand drawings, planning, and specifications * Possess controls, PLC's, TC's, and electronics trouble shooting and repair skills. * Must be proficient with modern testing and measurement instruments and equipment. * Must be skilled and proficient with 480V, 3ph (and lower) power and control circuits. * Possess a working knowledge of general electrical safety requirements * Possess a working knowledge of electrical codes. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is a classification performing skilled, installation and assembly of electronic and electro-mechanical systems and components found in transit light and heavy rail vehicles. Incumbents work independently according to accepted standards of the trade, supervisory direction, Company established procedures, practices, and specifications. This class of electricians work is specifically install, and assemble electro-mechanical and electronic systems and other miscellaneous electrical components found on transit revenue vehicles. Qualifications EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Following a pre-established schedule for assembly and installation of electronic and related electro-mechanical systems found on transit vehicles. Including those associated with propulsion, train control, pneumatic supply and brake control, air conditioning, annunciation, communications, door control, lighting, and auxiliary electrical supply. Performs modifications to rail vehicle electronic and electro-mechanical systems, as directed by engineering and supervisory staff. Works with engineering and other production staff regarding modifications. Uses diagnostic test equipment and precision measuring devices in the course of the work; may fabricate new testing equipment as required for use on new components and systems. Performs secondary dismantling and repair of electronic and electro-mechanical systems. Works closely with transit vehicle mechanics in performing primary repairs. Reads and interprets diagrams, engineering drawings, manuals, schematics and work orders. Documents work performed and parts and materials used; follows specified safety procedures. Knowledge of: Basic operating principles of analog and digital electronics, electrical and electronic circuitry, and associated mechanical mechanisms, methods, equipment and materials used in the primary maintenance and repair of a variety of electronic and electro-mechanical systems, components and equipment. Team members are responsible for meeting production goals and making sure all aspects of compliance are being met in the areas of safety and quality. 1) Maintain, repair, troubleshoot, and overhaul the plant's mechanical equipment. Knowledge and skills requires, but not limited to, the following: a) Shafts, keys and keyways, pins, and shaft couplings. Bearing mounts and mounting techniques, inspection, care and replacement. Analyze bearing failure and determine probable cause(s). e) Lubrication. Types of lubricants, viscosity classifications, methods of lubrication and the proper storage, handling, and disposal of lubricants. 2) Troubleshoot to the component level, research manufacturers' manuals and data, identify replacement parts and properly requisition replacement parts and assembles through the plant's logistics system. a) Use of manuals, checklist, schematics, blueprints, test equipment and other diagnostic tools b) Interviewing production operators, co-workers, supervisors and managers about equipment symptoms and failure. c) Logical use of troubleshooting method. 3) Observe equipment in operation and detect problems through sight or sound a) Maintain familiarity of normal day-to-day equipment operation b) Can operate the equipment so that pre-flight tests can be conducted c) Recognize the failure symptoms of bearings, V-belt, gears, couplings, etc. 4) Care and operation of hand tools, drill press, sanders and grinders, band saws, torque wrench, etc. Must be able to use measurement devices such as a micrometer, Vernier caliper, tape measures, etc. Experience with the care and use of laser alignment tools for coupling alignments. a) Make measurements with micrometers, scales, etc. and use mathematical equations to determine differences in readings. Hydraulic, steam and electrical systems a) Pneumatic systems: i) Shut-off valves, pressure regulator, pressure gauge, lubricators, hose coupling, and the hose. ii) Safety rules and lock-out procedures for pneumatic systems b) Steam systems and high speed rotating equipment i) Maintenance of steam valves, pressure reducing valves, condensate traps, etc. ii) Safety rules and lock-out procedures for steam systems. c) Electrical systems: i) Basic elements of electricity (resistance, current and voltage), circuit protection devices (fuses, circuit breakers, etc.), properties of insulation and conductors, switched, solenoids and relays ii) Safety rules and lock-out procedures for electrical systems 6) Gas weld (oxyacetylene and torch brazing) and arc weld (stick (shielded metal-arc), MIG (metal inert gas), and TIG (tungsten inert gas) as well as oxyacetylene cutting torch. a) Arc welding i) Proper use and safety of the arc welding outfit. Understand the principles and safety precautions required when using D-C welding currents ii) Proper selection of electrodes, arc voltage and welding currents b) Welding safety i) Wearing proper personal protection (welding googles, gloves, cap, long-sleeved shirt, etc.) ii) Properly processing the plant-welding permit, use of welding screens, fire extinguishers, implementing fire watch, etc. c) Gas cutting torch i) Proper use and safety of the oxyacetylene cutting outfit (cylinders, pressure regulators, pressure gages, hoses, torch and torch tip) ii) Proper flame adjustment.
