General Summary: Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, operates various pieces of construction type equipment in the process of maintaining repairing streets, public rights-of-way, buildings, properties and utilities. Performs a variety of tasks to construct, maintain and repair streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, manholes, catch basins, water mains and sewers. Operates equipment in the removal, collection, disposal of solid waste, biosolids, snow, ice and the loading and spreading of various types of materials related to work assignments. Performs general maintenance, minor repairs, cleanup of equipment. Works to maintain and repair equipment and machinery at the wastewater treatment plant, water treatment plant and pumping stations. Performs other related activities as assigned.
Typical Duties:
Reads and comprehends equipment manuals explaining the operation and maintenance of machinery.
Installs and repairs broken water mains and repairs or replaces water services.
Replaces and installs fire hydrants or repairs hydrants by replacing worn parts such as pins, bolts and foot valves.
Replaces and installs water valves or repairs valves by replacing bolts, gaskets and valves.
Raises or lowers manholes, catch basins, fire hydrants and valve boxes.
Services and replaces water meters as necessary.
Notifies water system customers when water services must be disrupted.
Operates trucks to haul materials, equipment and personnel in connection with maintenance and construction projects. Operates a variety of utility equipment including pumps, air compressors and tapping machines.
Operates backhoes, loaders, excavators, tractors, lawn mowers and other equipment, as assigned.
May be required to mark location of water and sewer utilities.
Opens, stores and compacts backfill in trenches and other excavations.
Operates snow removal equipment on streets, sidewalks and parking areas.
Performs preventative maintenance, repair and modification work on equipment and machinery at the wastewater treatment plant, water treatment plant and pumping stations. Also works on the installation of replacement or new equipment. The equipment and machinery consist of items such as: collector and conveyor mechanisms, various types and sizes of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, gear drives, couplings compressors, check valves, pressure relief valves, dehumidifiers, and electric heaters, electrical and pneumatic controls, chemical feed equipment, and various size motors along with their electrical controls. Maintenance of this equipment may include such things as lubrication of machinery, adjusting or replacing pump packing, disassembly and reassembly of pumps, replacement of bearings and seals in machinery, replacement or adjustment and balancing of rotating machinery, and other general maintenance as prescribed in equipment manuals.
Assists with emergency maintenance work as assigned.
Participates in general building, grounds, forestry and street maintenance work as assigned.
Maintains and cleans work area, equipment, tools, and maintenance vehicles.
Returns tools and materials to proper storage area. Records use of parts and materials as assigned.
Must be available to respond to emergency call-out situations.
Reports on a timecard the jobs worked. Prepares other reports as required.
May perform work of lower classified employee as assigned.
Performs all other activities as assigned.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, talk and hear. The employee must be able to squat, stoop, or kneel. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 90 pounds of material. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Eligibility Requirements: High school graduate or G.E.D. with four (4) or more years of routine operation and maintenance of dump trucks, backhoes, and related equipment, as well as experience in the repair of machinery and equipment including industrial size pumps, motors and compressors, or equivalent combination of job-related education and experience. Must demonstrate working knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used in operation and maintenance of machinery, troubleshooting techniques, and basic mechanics and electricity.
Must possess valid Michigan Class “A” Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire, and good driving record at time of appointment and must be licensed to operate job required equipment as mandated by State law and must maintain licensure during employment in this classification.

* Working on a paving crew to place non-compacted asphalt in proper location with a shovel and then racking the material with a lute

* Visually checks form work to ensure that the forms meet line and grade requirements

This is a great opportunity for individuals to apply their knowledge and skillset to the maintenance and operation of the wastewater treatment plant, pump stations (electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment), and lawn, grounds, and landscaping tasks. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING:
* Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License, Group B with Air brake and N (tank) endorsement including the DOT mandated medical card, HIGHLY preferred OR must be able to obtain a CDL B with N (tank) endorsement AND DOT medical card within 90 days from date of hire, or will be terminated.
* May be subject to emergency call-in and shift work as required.
IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:
* High School Diploma or GED required (college level coursework in an industrial or mechanical field of study preferred); AND
* Four (4) years of experience in the operation and repair of wastewater pumping equipment or wastewater treatment plant equipment of which two (2) years must have been in a mechanical maintenance and repair capacity.
* An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
POST-HIRE REQUIREMENTS:
* Must complete and pass MDOT Drug & Alcohol Training.
* Must pass and maintain Confined Space Training and Certification.
* Must pass and maintain Powered Industrial Truck and Aerial Work Platform Training and Certifications.
* Selected candidate(s) will be offered as a condition of employment to participate in an employer paid Hepatitis B inoculation program.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
* Maintains a variety of process equipment used at the wastewater treatment plant.
* Enters manholes and other confined spaces as required in accordance with all applicable safety procedures
* Uses air quality monitoring equipment prior to and during confined space entries.
* Maintains written and electronic records of work performed and supplies used.
* May drive a pick-up truck and utility vehicles to and from work sites in the plant facility or pump stations.
* Drives and operates a pick-up truck for snow removal and towing generators to work sites. Operates a vehicle and trailer with a combined weight (GVW) of over 10,000 pounds.
