Dr. Heidi Shelton D.C., R.T(R): There are many ways to maximize your salary potential, anywhere from taking on extra shifts and call, to taking on bigger responsibilities like a leadership or supervisor role. It is important to maintain your registry through valid continuing education credits that would actually improve your skills and benefit the clinic or hospital you work at. In addition, post-primary certifications can also allow you to obtain a higher salary. Most importantly, working with a financial planner will help you learn how to save and maximize your income.
What Mammography Technician skills would you recommend for someone trying to advance their career?
Dr. Heidi Shelton D.C., R.T(R): Soft skills and communication are more important than ever. It is paramount that you communicate to your patient, their family, and other healthcare providers effectively. As we see more technological advances, it becomes easier for us to step away from one-on-one interaction with our patients. However, good communication remains the key to the success of your exam.
What will help Mammography Technicians increase their earning potential?
Dr. Heidi Shelton D.C., R.T(R): Decide today what kind of technologist you will be. Decide to take pride in your work, uphold your code of ethics and provide the best patient care possible. Get involved and stay active with your state and national imaging societies. And don't forget where you came from, you were a student once, so help the new students become the great technologist that you have grown to be.

Karen Bubb: In the fields of Radiologic Technology and Medical Sonography, continuous learning is the key to a long-term career. Never assume you know it all because there is always something new and innovative to learn. New technological advancements are continuously being released and it is vital to keep up with the newest techniques. The more you know and the more relevant you are in the professions; the more employers will seek you out and compensate you for your expertise. Also, do not get into bad habits when it comes to ergonomics. Musculoskeletal injuries are common in sonographers and can ruin a budding career fast.
