INTEGRITY SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
The Polk County Sheriff's Office is seeking quality candidates who will embody the values and diversity of the community as a member of the agency. This program allows you the opportunity to be certified in both Law Enforcement and Corrections under the Dual Academy Scholarship Program or certified in Corrections only under the Detention Academy Scholarship Program.
While attending the Dual Academy (approximately eight months) or Detention Academy (approximately four months), the Sheriff's Office will provide a monthly stipend of $3,000 dollars per candidate (first and last month pro-rated). This program does not include health insurance or workers' compensation benefits, as you are not a member of the Sheriff's Office; however, it is required that you obtain some form of insurance while attending the Academy.

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for public safety work in various divisions, districts, offices, or specialized sections of the Sheriff's Office. An employee in this classification performs a variety of duties in support of certified law enforcement personnel including preliminary non-violent investigations, investigations of automobile accidents, minor crime scene processing of crimes against property and other routine non-emergency law enforcement activities. Employee performs various community service functions in order to allow certified law enforcement personnel to handle higher priority incidents and to provide a more efficient and effective response to calls for service. Performs administrative functions such as maintenance of investigative logs and the collection, sorting and filing of police reports, pawn slips and evidence slips and the recording of supplemental information from victims of crimes; assists citizens with vehicle identification number verifications for title applications; makes notification to victims of crime recovery of their property.
Performs data entry relative to crime analysis and crime reporting.
Transports lost and found children, witnesses, indigent individuals, truants, and complainants.
Performs reception duties as dictated by the function of the assigned work unit, i.e., receiving and responding to telephone inquiries, directing to persons to appropriate entities or departments, providing information.
Performs follow-up investigations to ensure resolution on excessive false alarms; investigates for the purpose of determining trigger source(s);
Operates radio equipment and performs dispatch work as applicable to location assignment.
Patrols area of assignment and maintains security of facilities, structures, traffic areas, access points, and/or grounds.
Testifies in depositions and court proceedings regarding the finding and processing methods used to gather evidence at the crime scenes.
Employees in this classification are assigned to work shifts which will include weekends, holidays, and extended emergency activation events (i.e. hurricanes). Employees must have the ability to work any shift and engage in flexible work assignments that can include voluntary and/or mandatory overtime to meet agency needs.

Minimum Requirements The Broward Sheriff's Office is now offering a hiring incentive for the Cadet - Department of Detention position. Candidates who successfully complete the selection process and are hired by the agency will receive a one-time payment of $5000.00 at the beginning of their service with the Department of Detention. This initiative will be discontinued once allocated funds are no longer available.
The Broward Sheriff's Office is now offering condensed testing for out of area candidates. Human Resources will schedule and coordinate the selection process within a short time frame to minimize travel. Applicants are responsible for all travel expenses.

Nature of Work
This is entry level work which provides the opportunity for practical experience and broad exposure to the fundamentals of detention functions within the Department of Detention of the Broward County Sheriff's Office. Work involves attending a Corrections Academy intended to provide preparatory training for a career in detention. Position participates in training programs and performs varied routine and technical non-sworn tasks in support of sworn detention functions. Employees in this classification receive supervision and administrative direction from a supervisor. Emphasis is placed on training the incumbent for continued employment within the agency. Performs related work as directed.
All cadets attending the Broward College Institute of Public Safety must successfully attain a minimum score of 75% on at least one Physical Profile test. Failure to attain the 75% score on one of the Physical Profile tests will result in the cadet's removal from the Academy and potential separation of employment from BSO.

Depending on functional area of assignment, the following physical requirements may apply:
Tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, and that may involve the dragging, pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects, such as in the event of chasing and subduing a suspect resisting arrest.
Tasks may involve standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time.
