Manchester University company history timeline

1889

The school was renamed Manchester College in 1889 when it moved to North Manchester.

1892

From 1892 the Technical School was funded by the Manchester Corporation, partly from national taxes, and it came to be known as the Manchester Municipal Technical School.

1902

Modelled on German technical high schools, a huge new building, now called the Sackville Street Building, was opened in 1902.

1932

Another Brethren-owned school, Mount Morris College in Mount Morris, Illinois, merged with Manchester College in 1932.

1948

In June 1948 the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks carrying hundreds of people from the Caribbean.

The Peace Studies Institute and Program for Conflict Resolution—the first undergraduate peace studies major in the United States, was established at Manchester in 1948.

1955

Professor Reg Revans became the first professor of industrial management at The University of Manchester in 1955.

1956

Professor Teddy Chester founded the Health Services Management Unit at The University of Manchester in 1956.

1963

Published in 1963, the Franks report recommended that two business schools should be set up in Manchester and London, in association with existing universities.

1966

Professor Enid Mumford joined MBS in 1966, investigating the impact of computer-based systems on people and organisations.

2004

Manchester Federal School of Business and Management established, a precursor to the 2004 merger.

2007

Professor Michael Luger became Director and Dean of the School in 2007.

2012

In July 2012, Manchester College became Manchester University, and in August 2012, enrolled its first doctoral class in pharmacy at a second campus in Fort Wayne, Ind.

In 2012 Manchester College was renamed Manchester University.

Manchester also expanded & opened its second campus featuring its state-of-the-art pharmacy school in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 2012.

In 2012, Manchester changed its name from Manchester College to Manchester University to reflect the growing number of graduate programs offered.

2015

In September 2015 the School was renamed Alliance Manchester Business School, or Alliance MBS, in recognition of Lord Alliance's generous £15 million donation and his long-standing relationship with the University and the Business School.

In 2015, the School celebrated its landmark 50th anniversary which included a host of celebrations.

2016

In May 2016, Manchester University launched the nation's first dedicated master's degree in pharmacogenomics.

2017

As part of the building project, a brand new Executive Education Centre and hotel will be completed in late 2017.

2019

The School’s new campus building was officially opened by Lord David Alliance of Manchester CBE on 11 June 2019.

2020

Dr Alexia Yates, Senior Lecturer in Modern History, and Dr Stefan Hanß, Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History, have been awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize 2020 worth £100,000 in recognition of their outstanding research achievements.
