What You'll Do
Automation & Integration
Program, integrate, and debug robotic and PLC systems for automated welding and assembly equipment.
Conduct offline robot programming, reach studies, and layout simulations using Cimstation, RoboGuide, RobotStudio, and Motosim.
Utilize CAD modeling tools (such as Creo) to develop and modify part designs, tooling, and layouts.
Support the installation, setup, safety validation, and qualification of automation systems prior to production release.
Process Improvement & Technical Support
Identify opportunities to improve product quality, process efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
Determine root causes of failures using statistical methods and recommend changes in designs, tolerances, or processing methods.
Troubleshoot design, material, or process issues in both new and existing systems.
Incorporate new technologies, methods, and materials to improve operations and manufacturing performance.
Provide technical support to production teams across shifts, resolving complex equipment and process issues.
Project Management & Collaboration
Partner with design, manufacturing, and project management teams to ensure seamless integration and execution.
Lead or support major automation projects, including new equipment launches and technology demonstrations.
Work with vendors, contractors, and corporate engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions on time and within budget.
Leadership, Training & Continuous Improvement
Mentor and train junior engineers and technicians in robotics, integration, and system troubleshooting.
Support apprenticeship and RIA certification programs, as well as facility tours and recruitment efforts.
Participate in integration and tooling audits, maintaining documentation and driving continuous improvement in programming and integration practices.
Required Experience & Education
Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical field (or equivalent experience).
Experience: Hands-on experience in a mechanical, manufacturing, or automation environment.
Proficiency in robotic programming and simulation tools (Fanuc, ABB, Yaskawa, etc.).
Knowledge of manufacturing processes, tooling, and system integration.
CAD proficiency (preferably Creo).
Complies with ISO 14001, and other relevant standards. Support, implement and understand the intent of the EMS policy. Participates with ISO-14001 as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:
Assist in developing the annual capital equipment budget for replacing the existing End of Life manufacturing equipment related to surface preparation like Blast and Paint application.
Troubleshoots day to day paint and pretreatment system processing problems, initiates solutions, and follow ups to evaluate effectiveness of changes to ensure practical cleaning, prep, masking, and painting, curing, and paint rework of production material
Previous painting experience with different brush styles and tools including electrostatic paint guns.
Must be self-directed, able to prioritize own workload and act with urgency while addressing issues
Use of thickness gauges to measure the thickness of paint.
Experience with sand/media blasting surfaces and rust removal.
Able to follow technical documents to properly mix, induce, and finish paints

Need to have a high mind set of reducing MTTR and MTBF and completion of any projects on time as planned without slipping the dates.

Actively participates in Production readiness buy-off process of any new equipment launch, process changes, equipment relocation etc.
Actively support Safety Risk RPN reduction initiative
Provide ManufacturingEngineering support for the company and provide on-going manufacturingengineering support for maintenance department related paint in both Heil and Marathon plants.
Assist in managing the document control procedures through the existing Quality Management System (QMS).
Oversee the justification, planning, and execution of individual capital projects related to Paint application equipment to scheduled timelines and within approved budget.
Evaluate production capacity capabilities of existing operations and recommend and implement enhancements as needed to improve paint capacity at both Heil and Marathon plants.
Need to be able to work on weekends if the maintenance team needs any help and/or if there are any special projects scheduled on weekends related to paint process and paint application equipment both at Heil and Marathon plants.
Analyze production processes, work balance, production scheduling, capacity, and cell concepts to optimize crew distribution for efficiency, capacity, and lead-time.
Identify manufacturing variability issues and work with Product Engineering, Production, and Maintenance to reduce or eliminate variation in manufacturing processes.
Implement lean manufacturing and Kaizen principles and concepts in the manufacturing areas.
Develop and lead cost reduction projects.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by both Heil and Marathon management.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The NPD/VAVE Engineer serves as a corporate-level engineering resource responsible for driving manufacturability, cost optimization, and standardization across all Astec divisions.
This role supports New Product Development (NPD) and Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE) initiatives that align with the Advanced ManufacturingEngineering Strategic Business Plan (AME SBP) - specifically under the pillars of Innovation Enablement, Process Optimization, and Operational Excellence.
By collaborating cross-functionally with Design Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations, and Site ManufacturingEngineering, this role ensures that products are designed and industrialized efficiently, safely, and profitably.
Deliverables & Responsibilities
1. NPD/NPI (New Product Development/Introduction)
a. Serve as the manufacturingengineering representative in product development teams.
b. Conduct Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/A) reviews during all design gate phases.
c. Co-ordinate with IE and AME to develop manufacturing routings, labor standards, and process documentation for NPIs.
d. Support Pilot and prototype builds to validate design, process capability and readiness for mass productions.
e. Identify and communicate manufacturability issues early in the design to minimize late-stage changes.

2. VAVE (Value Analysis and Value Engineering)

c. Develop and maintain VAVE project funnel and savings dashboard in alignment with corporate targets.
d. Conduct competitive benchmarking, product teardowns, and process cost studies to support ideation.
e. Validate and track cost savings through data-driven methods (Std. Labor time, BOM impact, etc.).
3. Adv. ManufacturingEngineering Standard and Manufacturing Integration
a. Support the deployment and continuous improvement of corporate AME standard, including:
b. PFEP (Plan for Every Part).
c. Line - Side Stock (LSS) systems
d. MBOM accuracy and process routings
e. PFMEA templates and work instruction formats.
f. Work with site ME to ensure consistent adoption of best practices in fabrication, welding, assembly, and paint.
g. Partner with AME Systems, IE and Paint Engineering teams to ensure new product/process alignment with automation and equipment capability.
4. Data and Digital Integration
a. Leverage tools such as Oracle Fusion, SigmaNest, Power BI and Excel based models to analyze cost, process and efficiency data.
b. Participate in Industry 4.0 Initiatives to bring digital visibility to manufacturing and product performance metrics.
c. Drive data-driven decision-making for capacity, labor optimization and cost competitiveness.
5. Cross-Functional Collaboration
a. Act as a liaison between Corporate AME, Site ME, Design Engineering, Procurement and Operations teams.
b. Facilitate and lead NPD/VAVE review meetings/workshops, ensuring project status, risks and savings realization.
c. Provide regular updates to AME leadership on key deliverables, metrics and Strategic Business Plan alignment progress.
6. Key Deliverables
a. DFM/A reviews and closure reports per product design phase.

ABOUT THE ROLE
This internship is for Summer 2026.
The Process Engineer Intern at Cornerstone Building Brands is responsible for learning and subsequently implementing the Cornerstone Production System methodology on multiple production lines and throughout different systems and processes. Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, this role will be on-site in Jasper, TN and will work closely with the operations team. The Jasper facility is a high volume 24/7 manufacturer of vinyl siding and this role will be heavily involved with troubleshooting day to day challenges while also leading future state projects.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Designs the ability to produce a quality product into the process.
Identify and analyze manufacturing problems to control and improve manufacturing.
Develops all necessary process and audit documentation (i.e. Visual Work Instructions, Standard Work Combination Table, Process Control Adherence Audit, etc.)
Assesses existing processes for areas of improvement utilizing Lean Manufacturing concepts (Kaizen, TPM, Value Stream Mapping, etc.) Six Sigma, designed experiment techniques, capability studies, etc.
Designs and/or sources equipment for manufacturing processes; evaluates and recommends implementation of competitive technology.
Leads, where applicable, or works in conjunction with plant maintenance to ensure that the facility and equipment are maintained and updated consistent with short- and long-term goals and objectives.
Provides training, as required, to associates.
Leads, where applicable, or works in conjunction with Quality Assurance, to monitor and document quality standards.
Presents capstone project as directed at the conclusion of the internship program.
