Full-time Description We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer II to join our engineering team in Roanoke, Virginia. This role is essential to support the Commercial, Manufacturing, and Field Service teams with innovative designs for fixed and mobile equipment used in the civil explosives industry. The successful candidate will follow designs through the entire lifecycle - working with the Commercial team on concept designs and specifications, Manufacturing on production and sustaining activities, and Field Service to provide comprehensive end-user support. This position is ideal for an engineer with 2-5 years of experience who is ready to contribute to complex equipment design projects. RESPONSIBILITIES * Designs the ability to produce a quality product into the process * Develop measurement systems required to measure facilities metrics or key process indicators * Identify and analyze manufacturing problems to control and improve manufacturing * Initiate, manage & participate in safety, quality, cost & process control improvement projects * Designs and/or sources equipment for manufacturing processes * Manages capital budget projects as assigned * Assists R & D effort to implement new products or process into production * Develops all necessary process documentation (i.e. Standard work, Visual Work Instructions) * Perform Capability Studies, Time Studies, Balanced Line Capacity Models, Flow Analysis, etc. * Assesses existing processes for areas of improvement utilizing Lean Manufacturing concepts (Kaizen, 5S, TPM, Value Stream Mapping, etc.) Six Sigma, design of experiment techniques, statistical process control, capability studies, etc. Includes leading/participation in continuous improvement events * Evaluates and recommends implementation of competitive technology * Leads, where applicable, or works in conjunction with plant maintenance to ensure that the facility and equipment are maintained and updated consistent with short- and long-term goals and objectives * Update and/or create plant layouts * Provides training, as required, to associates * Works in conjunction with Quality Assurance, to monitor and document quality standards (i.e. FMEAs, Control Plans) * Performs other duties as assigned Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering. * Three or more years of process/manufacturing engineering experience in a manufacturing environment * 5+ years of Lean Manufacturing experience * Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt preferred * Ability to create and understand drawings and blueprints * Safety and quality minded * Proficient in MS Office, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks * Must be legally allowed to work in the Unites States, sponsorship not available * Minimal travel required Additional Information All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines. This position requires the capability to manage projects, processes, and people. This position will support the implementation of systems to improve equipment, process reliability, operator knowledge and involvement. The primary assignment is in the Bleached Pulp Mill and Wastewater Treatment Plant with call duty covering the entire Fiberline process area. How You Will Impact WestRock * Solve process, equipment, and operational failures. * Assist in maintenance shut down execution of process lines, monitor key parameters of bleaching units and wastewater treatment plant regulations, and adjust production schedules as needed to support overall mill performance. * Use Fiberline Visual Reports (PI Vision, PI Processbook) to monitor and report key Fiberline KPI's such as brightness, dirt, chemical usage, COD's, BOD's, and sludge quality. * Maintain, develop, and enhance operator checklists for start-up and shut down of equipment and support SME implementation of new process training systems.
