Responsibilities Engineering Co-op Students will be working in 2D AutoCAD and 3D Inventor modeling to aid manufacturing engineering when making changes to machines, products, and given opportunities in design work. Candidates will be challenged, supported, and trained by an experienced team to be successful in this position. The position is available for up to 40 hours per week and will accommodate school schedules. Job Description Materials Engineer - Heat Treat & Metal Coating Type: Full-Time, Onsite Salary Range: $60,000 - $82,000 base (slightly negotiable for strong regional relocation candidates) About the Opportunity A heat-treating and metal-coating manufacturer in Springfield, OH is seeking a skilled Materials Engineer to join their team. This is a critical role that bridges production and engineering - ensuring the integrity, performance, and reliability of metallic components through expert control of heat-treating processes. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in heat-treat or metallurgical environments and understands how to optimize material performance for manufacturing and coating operations. Regional relocation may be considered for candidates in nearby states (IN, MI, KY, PA). What You'll Do • Develop, implement, and refine heat-treating procedures for ferrous and non-ferrous materials used in production. • Analyze material properties and recommend alloys, heat-treat cycles, and coatings based on performance and design requirements. • Ensure quality and process control standards are met - with emphasis on hardness, microstructure, and mechanical properties. • Provide technical support to production teams, including troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for process or material issues. • Collaborate with quality, maintenance, and operations to maintain compliance with ISO, CQI-9, and customer-specific standards. • Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation, including control plans, specifications, and metallurgical reports. • Perform failure analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions. • Lead or support continuous improvement initiatives in heat-treating and materials processing. • Stay current with advancements in materials science and heat-treat technology. What You Bring • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field. • Minimum 3 years of experience in heat-treating or metallurgical processes in a manufacturing environment. • Strong understanding of metallurgy, phase transformations, and material characterization. • Hands-on experience with furnace operations, process control, and CQI-9 compliance. • Proficiency in hardness testing, microstructure evaluation, and metallographic analysis. • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. • Collaborative mindset with the ability to support cross-functional teams.
