What Drives Success
Under general supervision, designs, builds and repairs a variety of tools, jigs, fixtures, welding, brazing, and assembly fixtures.
Responsible for guiding and training other tool makers. Analyzes specifications, lays-out metal stock, sets up and operates a wide variety of exact tolerance machine tools. Fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metal working dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools. Modifies dies to conform to engineering changes. Troubleshoots equipment and makes complex repairs.
What We Are Looking For
Requires a high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires 1-3 years related experience.
Moderate knowledge of how to tear down units, trouble shoot for problems, determine extent of troubles, repair damage mechanism or replace worn or defective parts and reassemble. Some knowledge of how to select the best material suited for specific purposes, troubleshoot and diagnose problems with metalworking dies and other tooling. Requires strong mathematical and analytical abilities. Able to read and interpret blueprints and diagrams. Must be able to move at least 50 pounds.
What We Offer
Compensation: This is an hourly non-exempt role. The starting pay range for this role and market is between $22.00- $26.25 /hour. Factors that may affect starting pay include geography/market, and the skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate. Employees in this role are also eligible to earn overtime when they work more than 40 hours in a week (or as otherwise required by state law).
Benefits: Subject to applicable eligibility requirements, the following benefits are offered for this role: tuition reimbursement; medical, dental, and vision insurance; prescription drug coverage; 401(k) retirement plan; short-term disability insurance; 8 weeks paid birthing leave; 2 weeks paid bonding leave; life and long-term disability insurance.

Position Purpose:
The Maintenance Apprentice will undergo comprehensive training to develop practical skills throughout a 6,000-hour DOL-certified Apprenticeship program. This structured program includes computerized learning, hands-on training, and instructor-led coursework in core maintenance disciplines, with a strong focus on manual machining. Apprentices will receive specialized instruction in operating lathes, mills, grinders, and other machining equipment, gaining proficiency in precision measurement, tooling selection, and material properties essential for fabrication and repair work.
Apprentices must demonstrate competency across multiple disciplines. Based on business needs and individual merit, further training in Electro-mechanical technology or Controls specialization may be pursued, complementing their expertise in machining and mechanical systems.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:
Preventative Maintenance and Production Support:
Assist experienced production mechanics with troubleshooting and repairs.
Perform preventative maintenance tasks as skills and training progress.
Rebuild and repair mechanical assemblies offline for re-installation into production equipment.
Document all maintenance activities in the CMMS system for tracking and analysis.
Complete self-directed computerized training, demonstrating consistent progress until completion.
Participate in high-profile equipment rebuilds and project work for advanced learning opportunities.

Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
1. First Key Responsibility:
a. Plan, layout and perform all bench and machine operations to construct, alter or repair progressive stamping dies.
b. Work from drawings, written specifications, and verbal directions.
c. Improvise tooling for unusual adaptations.
d. Surface grind tool steel and carbide to .0001”
e. Work patiently to achieve the precision demanded by the fine work
f. Must be able to use precision measuring instruments to check for proper dimensions of the workpieces.
g. Plan your project and workload, work with others as well as tool room foreman to schedule workflow through various departments (i.e. wire edm)

a. Assess problems and troubleshoot issues by reviewing the progression strip under a microscope
b. Look for wear, misalignment, and sources of issues that affect tolerances or productivity.

d. Troubleshoot based upon information that can be measured or checked
e. Keep careful notes when working on and/or troubleshooting a die

Position Summary:
Under Minimal supervision, machinists set up and operate manually controlled machines such as vertical mills, metal lathes, and surface grinders to ensure proper repair of plastic injection molds and related tooling. Primary Responsibilities:
Ensure all mold shop equipment is in proper working order before using them. Notify supervisor if machinery and or tools are not working properly.
Determines accurate and efficient methods to repair molds.
Assist in documenting the movement of molds in and out of the facility. Keep good records for efficient retrieval and accurate reporting.
Disassemble, clean, and reassemble molds and all components of injection molds as well as changing their components.
Performs mold repair work on cores and cavities due to damage or wear.
Repair and or build custom jigs and assembly fixtures as needed.
Use various measuring instruments like calipers, dial indicators, micrometers to verify tool and part compliance.
Maintain proper inventory of spare parts.
Maintain mold history record including preventive maintenance and repairs.
Performs mold repair personally, proficiently operates all tool room equipment and machinery.

Purpose: Primary purpose of the job is to provide requested products and services to Shell Technology Center Houston occupants and customers in support of research, projects and facilities management. Site consists of 43 buildings on 200 acres with 1.2 mm square feet of space and about 1,100 occupants.
The Machinist may work in the machine shop, maintenance shops or customer facilities providing precision machining to tolerance levels, idea to concept design, blueprint drawing, documentation, material selection, heat treating, special machining process, process application, fabrication, procurement, data collection, troubleshooting for Research and Development projects and maintenance services.
Suitable applicants must be competent in CNC, EDM and manual machining processes.
In addition, the Machinist will:
Handle material purchases from a variety of vendors, tooling selection for projects, coordination with outside shops, rate negotiations with outside shops, customer feedback and up‐dates on projects sent to outside shops.
Be computer competent and mentor others in the use of computer programs and policies around their use. Uses the range of Microsoft software required for conducting business and all others such as SAP/SERP, SAPTMS and other re‐quired programs for business continuity.
Possess detailed machining knowledge and fabrication experience. Contribute to project and customer design planning. Always look for new and innovative approaches to fabrication of equipment. Assist or produce drawings for clients and as‐sists in design of equipment. Reverse engineer parts and is capable of reading detailed/complex prints.
Possess detailed knowledge and troubleshooting experience. Coaches and develops others. Implements system level corrective action. Contributes to project and customer change activity planning. Have design/build experience which includes troubleshooting and producing, reading, and interpreting blueprints, manuals, P&ID's and datasheets, as well as material certification documents. Very customer focused and implements corrective action to ensure customer satisfaction.
Independently use all measurement devices, tools and per‐forms machine tool operations including manual machine tools, lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, saws and radial drills. Also possesses knowledge of intricate measuring de‐vices and machine equipment used by outside shops such as gun drilling, EDM and metal finishing shops. Pass this information on to co-workers in the shop. Is the go to person for machining needs at STCH. Is very self-directed and extremely capable of thinking through projects, making recommendations and produce equipment required for R&D to perform their work.
Possess detailed knowledge of specifications and standards and coaches' others in their use. Obtains material certifications and providing quality assurance for materials as specified. Applies all ASTM, ANSI and other Shell and external standards required to fabricate parts/equipment. Passes this knowledge on to co-workers.
Mastery of tool & die making techniques, precision machining, metallurgy, heat treating, machine application, pressure equipment, welding, fabrication, shop math and trigonometry.
Mastery of machining precision straight threads, taper threads, upset, multiple lead and ACME threads.
Mastery of precision machining and fabrication of parts from materials such as carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels, nickel steels, plastics, Teflon's, Plexi-glass, and ceramics.
Creates and manages maintenance file, drawings and records systems. Maintains a file system associated with as‐signed projects for reference and historical data. This includes prints, drawings, and sketches as well as data sheets for pressure equipment built following ISO standards. This in‐formation is provided to the customer on job completion. Maintains file for material certifications.
Must be able to work with a very diverse clientele and at times under extreme pressure and cost restraints. Must be able to coach and be a leader for diversity.
Ensures shop personnel are adequately trained on existing and new equipment in the shop. Schedule training for new equipment.
Understand PMI (Positive Material Identification) processes and have personnel ready to use PMI equipment to verify mill certs as well as assist the PEI team for PMI work related to maintenance and projects as required.
Run all types of manual machine tools, lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, saws, radial drills, CNC program for milling, CNC milling setup and machining. For close tolerance prototype Research and Development applications.
