Manwich company history timeline

1918

Perhaps the most famous Sloppy Joe’s was a bar in Havana, Cuba, that opened up in 1918, an enormously popular tourist spot for Americans, particularly during prohibition.

1926

There is one camp that believes the sloppy joes evolved from loose meat sandwiches that were introduced by Floyd Angell, the founder of the Maid Rite Restaurants, in 1926.

1930

Some attribute the original Sloppy Joe to a cafe in Sioux City, Iowa, where, many years ago, in 1930 a cook named Joe added tomato sauce to his “loose meat” sandwiches.

1940

John Mariani in The Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink says that the origins are unknown but that the first mention in print was 1940 for an Ohio restaurant.

1948

According to Andrew F. Smith in The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America the sandwich was “firmly established in America’s sandwich culture” by 1948.

1957

In 1957, a Canadian newspaper published an article about the popularity of sloppy joes in American school cafeterias.

1969

Manwich is the brand name of a canned sloppy joe sauce introduced in 1969.

1977

Ebony Magazine: August, 1977

Later in 1977, due to the popularity, Manwich added a family-sized canned of its sauce to the markets.

1994

There’s also a notable appearance in King of the Hill, when Bobby, upon receiving a meatless Sloppy Joe, exclaims, “My Sloppy Joe is all sloppy, and no joe.” It’s appeared multiple times in The Simpsons, perhaps most memorably in a “Treehouse of Horror” episode from 1994, when the juvenile delinquent Jimbo is ground into the cafeteria’s Sloppy Joes.
