Town of Marana company history timeline

1977

In 1977, with water resources becoming more sought after, Marana’s founders decided to incorporate their 10-square-mile town to protect their right to water.

1979

In early 1979 the town began to grow through an aggressive annexation policy and is now nearly 120 square miles with an estimated population of 21,000.

1981

In 1981, major repairs to the primary runway were completed and it was re-opened with 4,200 feet in length.

1982

In 1982, the terminal building and offices of the operator were constructed along with the expansion of the auto parking area.

1990

In 1990, expansion and the paving of the auto parking area associated with the terminal building were completed.

1996

The Marana Stockyards (1996 to present) is the only stock auction house in the Santa Cruz Valley.

1999

In 1999, ownership of the Avra Valley Airport was transferred to the Town of Marana and the name of the airport was changed to Marana Northwest Regional Airport.

2005

The 110,000 square foot Marana Municipal Complex—housing Administrative Services, Customer Services, Development Services, the Marana Police Department and the Municipal Courts—was dedicated 2005.

2012

Today’s growth in the town can easily be attributed to the war that was won over this facility back in 2012, when town officials and residents came together to endorse the state legislation that eventually granted Marana control of the plant.
