Maranatha was chartered by the State of Wisconsin in 1968.
Sacred Heart continued with this mission until 1955 when it opened as a military academy. It continued in that mission until 1968 when the Notre Dame officials decided to move the school to Indiana and the buildings were put up for sale.
Doctor Cedarholm started Maranatha’s Graduate School of Theology back in 1970, and three years later he founded the Maranatha Baptist Academy.
Maranatha Baptist Academy was founded in 1973 as a ministry of Maranatha Baptist University due to the vision of Doctor B. Myron Cedarholm.
Marriott and his wife, Miriam, met at Maranatha in 1974.
His pastoral experience dates back to 1979, when a Bible study he started in Oak Ridge, Tenn., led to the founding of the Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
In the fall of 1983, Doctor Cedarholm turned over the presidency to present leader, Doctor Arno Q. Weniger Jr., who left his 19-year pastorate of Calvary Baptist Church in Normal, Ill.
The present dining facility was expanded in 1988 when enrollment was 465.
Phelps comes to Maranatha from Trinity Baptist Church in Concord, N.H., where he has served as the senior pastor since 1989.
Maranatha also earned regional accreditation in 1993, a pivotal moment in the university’s academic history.
The dining commons is scheduled for completion by next July and will be ready for use in fall of 2005.
08 14 Maranatha Baptist Bible College will be offering a nursing program with the start of the 2005 school year, college officials announced at today’s business community breakfast.
Beginning with the 2005 term, the college will offer a Bachelor of Arts program in nursing, along with a Bachelor of Science degree program.
The newest major building on campus, the Dining Complex, opened in the fall of 2005.
The Global Encounters missions program began in 2006.
The current president is Doctor Marty Marriott, who began his duties during the Spring semester of 2010 and was installed on March 18, 2010.
He will take office during the 2010 spring semester.
The Board of Trustees approved the name change to Maranatha Baptist University on October 28, 2013, which led to its announcement to the faculty and staff on November 15, 2013, and to the student body in December of 2013.
In March of 2014, the university’s new branding and mascot–the Sabercat–were released in a special ceremony.
In May 2014, the School of Education introduced a new online graduate program, the Master of Education in Teaching and Learning.

Maranatha offers 39 undergraduate bachelor’s degree programs in seven academic units as well as six graduate degree programs in the seminary including the Master of Divinity and the Doctor of Ministry (added in 2015).
