Carey was born on March 27, 1969, in Huntington, New York to Alfred Roy Carey who was Afro-Venezuelan, and Patricia Hickey who is white American with Irish heritage.
Her debut album, Mariah Carey, was released in 1990 and showcased her talent and ability.
In 1991 Carey won Grammy Awards for best new artist and best female pop vocalist.
Their divorce spearheaded Carey’s transition from girl-next-door pop melodies to R&B and hip-hop, beginning with her Butterfly album in 1997.
The single “Heartbreaker” (featuring Jay-Z) topped the charts in 1999, making Carey the first artist to hit number one on the Billboard singles chart in each year of a decade.
She first won the award as a member of the R&B group Destiny’s Child in 2000.
Her physical and mental health were also in limbo after she revealed having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2001 and extending herself to the point of exhaustion on her movie project.
Survivor (2001), the group’s third album, reached the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
Later that year she signed with Island/Def Jam, but her first album for the label, Charmbracelet (2002), was a disappointment.
Beyoncé used her songwriting talents to pen her first solo album, Dangerously in Love (2003). The album debuted to rave reviews, and, aided by the exuberant single “Crazy in Love,” which featured rapper Jay-Z, it topped charts around the world.
Destiny’s Child reunited in 2004 to release Destiny Fulfilled.
However, her follow-up, The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), was a critical and commercial success, becoming the top-selling album of the year in the United States, with more than six million copies sold.
The trio embarked on a world tour in 2005, during which they announced that the group would officially disband.
The decade ended with two more successful albums and a new marriage to actor and rapper Nick Cannon in 2008.
The album as a whole generated several hits, including the assertive “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” and it contributed to Beyoncé’s dominance of the 2010 Grammy Awards.
At the age of 41, Carey gave birth to twins Moroccan and Monroe in 2011.
Their eldest daughter was born in 2012 and is named Blue Ivy.
On the expansive and musically variegated Lemonade (2016), Beyoncé focused on themes of betrayal and perseverance.
As of 2020, Carey has recorded fifteen studio albums.
Beyoncé later cowrote and performed “Be Alive” for the film King Richard (2021), and it received an Oscar nomination for best original song.
