Mission San Rafael Arcángel was founded in 1817 as a hospital to treat the sick Native Americans.
Believing the mission fathers, many of Marin’s people accepted the Christian faith and became attached to the San Rafael mission, where a feudal system of Indian labor evolved. “In 1822, Mexico broke away from the domination of Spain, and California became a province of the Mexican Republic.
The mission grew and prospered and was granted full mission status in 1822.

Built in 1904 as a private home, this beautiful property was converted into a charming bed and breakfast inn during the seventies.
