Marine Corps League company history timeline

1923

The Marine Corps League was established by Major General John A. Lejeune, Commandant of the Marine Corps, in 1923.

1928

By 1928, detachments reached to the west coast.

1929

LeJeune remained as national commandant until 1929, when Maj.

1930

LeJeune then appointed Neville as the National Commandant of the Marine Corps League for the duration of his term until the next national convention in St Louis, MO in 1930.

1931

The League prospered and expanded under the leadership of Lations, who was national commandant until 1931, when the ninth national convention in Buffalo, New York elected Carlton A. Fisher of the Niagara-Frontier detachment to succeed Lations.

1932

In 1932, a movement was started in Washington under the guise of economy to abolish the Marine Corps.

1934

John F. Manning of Methuen, Massachusetts succeeded Fisher as national commandant at the convention in Denver, Colorado in 1934.

1938

Florence E. O'Leary of Cincinnati, Ohio succeeded Illch as national commandant at the national convention in Washington, DC in 1938.

1944

In turn, Detachment 14 received its national charter on 15 April 1944.

1996

James L. Hammons, MCL Detachment #939, Aiken, South Carolina was formed in 1996 to fulfill the mission within the context of service to our community.

2013

In 2013, the Detachment held the first Hike to raise funds for Captain Greg Galeazzi, who suffered severe injuries from an IED attack in Iraq.

2014

In 2014, the Detachment had more than doubled in size and the annual event raised money to support the Semper Fi fund. $12,000 was raised to support the Semper Fi fund.

2015

In 2015, the Detachment continued to grow and again raised funds to support the Semper Fi fund. $10,000 was raised to support the Semper Fi fund.

2016

The efforts of the 2016 Hike were to raise funds and awareness for the alarming statistic of 22 Veterans per day who lose their lives to suicide.

In 2016, the Detachment’s members, along with supporting Veterans and service members did a 10 mile Hike leading up to the event.

2017

The efforts of the 2017 Hike proved a success almost $50,000 in funds were raised and the group of hikers built awareness for the alarming statistic of 20 Veterans per day who lose their lives to suicide.
