Marion Military Institute history

After a second fire in 1854, Howard students were again housed within the community and classes were moved back to Siloam Baptist Church where schoolwas carried for one year until a new dormitory was completed on the site of the current campus.

During the Civil War, the Chapel and Lovelace Hall, both built in 1857, were used as Breckinridge Military Hospital, treating both Union and Confederate soldiers.

In 1863, the Medical Director of the Confederate Army made application for use of the college as a hospital.

Classes were reinstated in 1864 to educate disabled Confederate soldiers and have since continued uninterrupted.

At the time of the move, Colonel James T. Murfee was the Howard College president, a position he had held since coming to Marion in 1871 from the University of Alabama.

Since 1887, Marion Military Institute (MMI) has achieved a national reputation for preparing young men and women for successful civilian and military careers.

"Honoring America's Scholars." Scabbard and Blade is a national joint service that was started in 1904 and has over 230 companies nationwide.

Along with the President's House (built 1912), these buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The White Knights were established in 1950.

The roots of the Early Commissioning Program date back to 1966.

To address these difficulties, the ECP was revised in 1978.
