Marist School company history timeline

1901

Marist School was founded by the Society of Mary (Marists) in 1901, opening its doors on October 2 of that year.

Father John E. Gunn, the church’s pastor, wanted to create an academy for the city’s Catholic residents, so in the summer of 1901 he purchased the lot next to his church.

1947

In 1947, the first graduating class of modern-day Marist College consisted of four Marist Brothers.

1962

In 1962, Atlanta’s Catholic schools began to desegregate, and Marist began accepting African-American students.

1963

To the astonishment of many, Brother Pius was able to open the school on September 9, 1963.

1976

Marist now has approximately 1,100 total students, about half of whom are female. It wasn’t until 1976, when the ROTC program was discontinued, that the school began to admit female students.

2015

An executive business suite was added in 2015 to support the school’s growing entrepreneurial curriculum.

2018

In May 2018, ground was broken for the Faith in the Future Campaign, which included the transformation of the original Brothers’ monastery into a 10-lab science with a planetarium dome.

A special accomplishment is that both the girls’ and boys’ volleyball teams won the state title during the 2018-19 school year—a first for any school in Illinois.

2019

The space, now named Monastery Hall, opened in August 2019, affording students unmatched facilities and science curriculum.
