Marshall Physician Services LLC history

The family care center evolved into John Marshall Medical Services, Inc., and was later renamed University Physicians & Surgeons, Inc., in 1994.

Beginning in 1998, Marshall opened three new multi-million dollar outpatient health care facilities—Marshall University Medical Center, Erma Ora Byrd Clinical Center and Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In 2004, the medical center formed a partnership with Avera Health to bring more physicians and services to the region.

The latest expansion project, which included 28,000 square feet of new spaces and 13,000 square feet of redesigned and remodeled space, opened in the winter of 2007.

In January 2009, the Marshall City Council voted in favor of selling the municipal hospital to the Avera system, and the official change in ownership occurred in November 2009.

In October of 2014, MedSynergies completed a sale to Optum, a division of United Healthcare.

In 2015, the school enrolled its first class into the newly created BS/MD program for West Virginia students, which allows them to complete their bachelor’s and medical degrees in just seven years.

Bill is involved with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, 2018 United States Senior Open and the University of Denver.

Marshall commemorated its 60th anniversary in 2019.
