Qualifications: A high school degree or a GED is minimum requirement for the position. Maine Department of Education Criminal History Record Check Certificate eligibility required. A certificate of good health must be signed by a licensed physician. Ability to climb ladders to a height of fifteen feet. Ability to routinely lift/move objects utilizing appropriate equipment. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Duties and Responsibilities: The responsibilities outlined below are representative and do not encompass or define all tasks that may be required by this position. Keeps the building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times. Regulates heat and ventilation systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to insure economical use of fuel, water and electricity. Shovels, plows, and/or sands/salts walks, driveways, parking areas and steps as appropriate. Checks daily to make sure all exit doors are unlocked in the AM for the start of school and then locked after school ends for the remainder of the day. The main door will remain unlocked for entry. All panic bolts on doors are maintained in working order. Cleans the floors in classrooms either by vacuuming, sweeping or mopping as appropriate. Rooms are cleaned of dust. Cleans the corridors after school and/or during the day if condition requires corridors to be cleaned. Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily. Washes all windows inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary. Keeps the ground free of rubbish. Performs such outdoor maintenance as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like as necessary to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition. Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation. Reports any repairs in need of attention to the Head Custodian. Makes minor building repairs as directed by the Head Custodian. Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair. Maintains a regular maintenance schedule on all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled maintenance. Reports immediately to the building administrator any damage to school property. Remains on the school premises during school hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and their attendance is required by the principal. Assumes the responsibility for the opening and/or closing of the building each day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off. Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand and requisitions such needed replacements from the principal in a timely manner as to not hinder the custodian in their duties. Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair. Uses good discretion when lifting. Moves furniture or equipment in buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the administrator. Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste. Candidates interested in becoming a substitute must complete a substitute application to start the process. The application may be obtained and completed electronically via ********************* paper copy available at the Superintendent's Office or downloaded via the district website via ************** Candidates interested in becoming a substitute must be eligible and obtain a Maine Department of Education C.H.R.C fingerprint certificate. The certificate when issued is valid for 5 years unless notified otherwise. This is a two-step process with candidate registering on line to have prints taken at a local facility and then submitting the MDOE initial application via their portal to meet initial requirements. (Please request the MDOE account set up and instructions for submitting initial application) Upon completion of initial MDOE fingerprint requirements the application and supporting documents will be reviewed by human resources. If appropriate a substitute interview will be scheduled with one of the building level principals or district nurse coordinator. Upon recommendation of building level principal the candidate will be notified that he/she is eligible to substitute in the district. At this time, candidate completes payroll documents to include direct deposit, W4's federal and state, Maine Public Employees Retirement enrollment (optional as a substitute) and I-9 identification form (proof identification in person is needed for this form). As a substitute in a Maine school district you have the option of enrolling in the Maine Public Employee Retirement System (7.65% contribution). This is a one time opt in/out option for each district. You are able to earn service credit hours for subbing. Please note the below exception to service credit hours. Although MainePERS has a "Y" code (Y0209) for substitute teachers and ed techs (II and III), payroll service credit does not include subbing for Ed Tech I's. In the district, the payroll service credit practice has been the same as MainePERS. There is legislative language to change the Ed Tech I to an Ed Tech II classification to 48 credits down from 60 credits, which may change some of the district Ed Tech I classifications in the near future resulting in MainePERS payroll service credit rules.
