Martignetti Companies - Carolina Wine & Spirits company history timeline

1963

They grew up working in the family store and took charge in the years following World War II. The family opened the Brighton store in 1963.

1970

In the 1970’s, the family expanded the distribution and wholesale business, focusing on fine wines.

1981

1982

Compromises on ownership limitations and primary source legislation were worked out and passed by the state legislature, only to have the governor veto the bill in early 1982.

1986

1986 – Carmine and Carl Martignetti assume control of the family business

1991

The first step in growing Martignetti Companies through external means came in 1991 with the purchase of Charles E. Gilman & Sons, a well-established wholesale liquor distributor in Medford and Springfield, Massachusetts.

1991 – Acquired distributor Chas.

1992

1992 – Acquired Pastene Wine Company

1994

In August 1994 the state issued some of the toughest sanctions in decades against the industry, ordering the six liquor wholesalers that were ensnared in the trap to shut down for five days.

1995

Weld conducted his own review of the situation and pronounced himself clean while urging the grand jury investigation to be wrapped up before the November elections. It would not be until the end of March 1995 that the state attorney general's office finally announced that it could find no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

1998

Martignetti rounded out its New England operations in 1998 by forming Martignetti Companies of Rhode Island.

1998 – Established Martignetti Companies of Rhode Island, which created a 5-state, regional New England Sales Organization

1999

The facility opened in 1999.

1999 – Constructed new company headquarters in Norwood, MA with a 325,000 sq/ft fully temperature-controlled warehouse

2000

In 2000 it acquired Classic Wine Imports, Inc., a Boston-based importer of fine wines.

2004

2004 – Appointed exclusive spirits distributor in Maine

2005

To match its growth, Martignetti expanded its warehouse until it exceeded 425,000 square feet in 2005.

2008

2008 – Formed partnership with the Mancini family - Rhode Island Distributing

2009

2009 – Acquired Commonwealth Wine & Spirits, bringing the E&J Gallo portfolio and other select fine wines and spirits to the company

2014

2014 – Maine spirits contract expires, re-established three state business in northern New England

2015

2015 – Acquired Vision Wine & Spirits with import operations in 42 states

2016

2016 – Constructed a State-of-the-Art, LEED Certified Martignetti Companies Headquarters in Taunton, MA, consolidating all office, sales and warehouse personnel into one location
