The year was 1949 - the first Volkswagen Beetle was sold, gas was only 17-cents a gallon, The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was created, Bruce Springsteen was born, local news station WROC-TV 8 signed on the air, and Mary Cariola Children’s Center was founded!
Back in 1949, Mary started this organization with two or three children and a staff of five.
1949 Day School for Handicapped Children opens with eight students.
1958 Center buys its own building, at 1530 East Avenue.
The Agency was renamed Mary Cariola Children's Center in 1977 — 10 years before Mary's passing — to honor her dedication to offering the highest quality innovative educational programs and small group homes for individuals with complex disabilities.
1979 First residential home opens on Browncroft Blvd. in Penfield.
1980 Preschool services expanded.
1994 Agency expands services to children with maladaptive behaviors.
2000 East Henrietta Campus high school opens.
2016 Therapeutic Respite Program opens at Bailey Road residence.
2018 450 students enrolled, 6 residential homes, 44 residents, 30 families receive community services
