Maria S. Gomez founded Mary’s Center with a group of health advocates and the DC Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs in 1988 to help immigrant women fleeing war and poverty in Central America.
In the 1990’s, with the vision of the Reverend Robert Castle, the former Ackley Center was transformed into St Mary’s Episcopal Center, a residence and day treatment center for people living with HIV/AIDS. Also, during Fr.
Since 1992 St Mary's Center Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) has provided medical quality medical care and social services top people living with HIV/AIDS in Harlem and New York City.
In 1996, a quarter-mile fitness loop and two additional tennis courts were installed in St Mary’s Park with city funds allocated by the City Council.
In 1997 our Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) opened.
In 2006, Parks completed the installation of synthetic turf at Saint Mary’s Park.
Our president and CEO, Maria Gomez, received the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal, the second highest civilian award granted by the White House.
The Hispanic Heritage Foundation presented Maria with their Healthcare Award in 2015.

One of the most recent additions to our programs is the Locomotor Training Program, which began in 2017 and provides rehabilitation to children with spinal cord injuries.
Georgetown School of Nursing & Health Studies recognized Maria for 30 Years of Innovative Leadership in 2018.
Marys’ Center received the 2018 platinum Seal of Transparency from Guidestar
