Maryland Fire&Rescue company history timeline

1930

Since 1930 the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute has provided world class training to emergency services personnel in the state of Maryland and around the world.

1952

A strong instructor training program has been in existence since 1952, modified and enriched many times, and in keeping with today's NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications.

Beginning in 1952, the program provided an outstanding manual, free of charge, to the duly enrolled student.

1960

The National Fire Service Staff and Command Course, a premier fire officer course in this country, has its roots reaching back to 1960, when University of Maryland personnel assisted in putting on the first one in this country for the federal government.

1968

1968 - Legislative action was enacted to establish the Howard County Fire Department

1971

July 1971 - Career employees assigned to four volunteer fire departments were transferred into the Howard County Classified Service as public safety employees

1972

The mobile teaching lab concept originated in 1972 and further enriched a unique fire service training program.

1974

Station 8 became the 8th fire station in the County October 1974 - Savage Volunteer Fire Company dedicated the Long Reach Fire Station.

1975

By far, one of the most significant events in the history of the state training program occurred on July 1, 1975, when the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute was created as a result of the 1975 Maryland General Assembly enacting SB 785 and the signing the legislation by the Governor.

1976

On June 1, 1976, a master plan entitled A Plan to Establish and Operate Regional Centers for Training Fire Fighters and Rescue Personnel in the State of Maryland was presented to the Chancellor of the University of Maryland at College Park.

1982

The 1982 Emergency Services Education and Training Plan of the Maryland Fire-Rescue Education and Training Commission supported many common goals and objectives of MFRI, as well as setting forth some additional ones.

1987

October 1987 - The Rivers Park Station was dedicated and was the tenth fire station in the County

1991

July 1991 - The Long Reach and Rivers Park Fire Stations were transferred to the Department from the Savage Volunteer Fire Company

2010

October 2010 – First time ever, HCDFRS wears pink t-shirts in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

2011

May 2011 - Trainee Class 26 graduates one of the largest number of female graduates in the history of the Department

2012

March 2012 – Bill to establish a single fire and rescue tax passed

June 2012 – Department implements digital pre-planning software called CommandScope to house pre-plan information

August 2012 – Department launches social media presence

2013

November 2013 – Two Howard County officers deploy to Liberia to help rebuild country’s fire service

2014

November 2014 – First-Ever regional Safety Symposium hosted
