MUIH company history timeline

1974

Since 1974, MUIH has educated and informed practitioners and leaders in health and wellness through transformative and relationship-centered programs that draw from traditional wisdom and contemporary science.

1991

In 1991, with the support of Sir Maurice Laing (pictured here with Doctor Berman) and the Laing Foundation, and the openness of the University of Maryland, Doctor Berman opened the doors to the first integrative medicine program at an academic medical institution.

1994

1994: Received first National Institutes of Health grant (R21) to study the effects of acupuncture on osteoarthritis

2000

2000-present: Became part of the BraveNet Clinical Network, the first practice-based research network in integrative medicine; there are now 14 members

The board of trustees establishes a mission “to change the experience of personal health in America by the year 2000.”

2001

2001: Founding member of the north American Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine (recently renamed Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health); Doctor Brian Berman elected as the first chair

2003

The community celebrates the lives of Pere Claude Larre, Ivan Illich, and J. R. Worsley, all of whom passed away in 2003, commemorating the profound impact these individuals had on the work of the Institute.

2005

2005: Doctor Berman was awarded the Bravewell Leadership Award for transforming medicine

2008

Levin joined MUIH in March 2008 and served as a senior officer for every president in the history of MUIH. He earned his Master of Arts in Transformative Leadership and Social Change from MUIH under the teachings of the University’s founders and elders.

2010

2010 also marks the 10th anniversary of the name change from the Traditional Acupuncture Institute (TAI) to Tai Sophia Institute, a name chosen to reflect the Institute’s expanding mission and graduate programs.

2013

2013: Maryland Hospitals for a Health Environment joined the Center for Integrative Medicine team

2015

2015-present: Integrative services collaboration with UMB Human Resource workplace wellness initiative, Launch Your Life.

2017

On March 8, 2017, the Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Doctor Steven Combs as the University’s president and chief executive officer.

On June 5, 2017 the University celebrated its annual Commencement and conferred its first-ever doctoral degrees in the fields of acupuncture, Oriental medicine, and clinical nutrition.

2018

On May 16, 2018 the new Career Services Center hosted its first Career Panel event for students and alumni.

On June 3, 2018, the University celebrated its largest graduating class of 463 students.

2019

On March 13, 2019, Maryland University of Integrative Health’s (MUIH) board of trustees announced that Marc Levin was appointed as the University’s president and chief executive officer.

2019-present: Culinary Medicine inducted into the medical school curriculum for first and second year medical students.

2022
