Job Summary
Summary: Working under the direction of licensed personnel, assists patients with activities of daily living tasks such as bathing, dressing, and eating. Also assists with taking patients' temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration. Does this position require Patient Care? Yes
Essential Functions:
* Performs vital signs, weights/heights, intakes, and outputs with accuracy and within established time frame and/or as requested.
* Completes all documentation in the medical record as required.
* Interacts with patients and their families effectively.
* Helps patients with a number of basic hygiene tasks. This may include bathing and dressing patients, helping them use the toilet if needed, and feeding them.
* Assist with helping patients turn and reposition themselves in bed as needed and help them move between the bed and a wheelchair if they use one.
* Listens to any health concerns patients may have and report those concerns to the nurses.

The Patient Care Associate (PCA) is responsible for performing a variety of direct and non-direct patient care duties, including routine patient care duties as well as clerical, supply, and messenger responsibilities. The PCA performs other patient care related duties and unit duties as needed and may function as a patient care observer to monitor for patient safety in situations where 1:1 observation is required.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This position reports to the Nurse Manager and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Qualifications, PCA, Certified (Salary Grade C25)
* High school diploma or equivalent required
* Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
* Ability to perform routine patient care activities under the direction of licensed nursing personnel requiring technical or on the job training required
* Nursing Assistant certification, Medical Assistant certification, or a nursing student who is actively enrolled into a nursing program with a minimum of 6 months student clinical experience required.
* Six (6) months to one (1) year nursing assistant experience required
* One (1) to three (3) years secretarial experience preferred
* Health care experience preferred
* Ability to multi-task and handle stress crisis situations effectively required
* Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required

For nursing students hired as PCAs, strongly prefer nursing students enrolled in BSN programs or direct-entry Masters' programs. - Bi-lingual skills preferred. - Prior experience in a clinical setting preferred. - Knowledge of medical terminology. - May not currently hold a valid nursing license. - Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the Red Cross required upon hire.

Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)
Performs patient care-related duties and clinical functions as assigned, including, but not limited to, performing and documenting point of care, vital signs, EKGs, bathing and other sanitary needs of patients, transferring and assisting with ambulation of patients, 1:1 patient observation for safety purposes, and phlebotomy. Assist RNs and physicians with other exams and treatments as required.
Completes all documentation such as height, weight, intake of fluids and food, output of urine/stool/vomit/other drainage, and blood glucose results in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Assists patients with food tray setup, eating, and feeding if necessary.
Ensures that patient rooms are stocked, equipped, and cleaned appropriately, as needs indicate and as patient volumes change.
Retrieves equipment from other areas, sets up equipment, cleans equipment between patient use, and reports malfunctioning equipment per organizational policy.
Assists with admitting and discharging patients.
Facilitates orientation of new PCA team members as directed.
Interacts with patients, visitors, and other care team members effectively
Communicates with nursing staff in an effective and timely manner around issues related to patient care and patient condition.
Fosters a positive and collaborative team environment, promoting teamwork and professional growth.

Job Summary: The Patient Care Assistant II provides patient care and performs unit activities under the direction of the Registered Professional Nurse. The Patient Care Assistant II provides patient care and performs unit activities under the direction of the Registered Professional Nurse. These include, but are not limited to, direct patient care activities such as taking vital signs and assisting patients with the basic activities of daily living, as well as non-clinical activities such as acting as a receptionist, coordinating equipment, providing transportation activities, and performing tasks specific to the department assigned.

The surgical/neuro science intensive care unit (SNICU) is a 28 bed unit that provides post-operative care to BMC's most complex patients. Patient types include trauma, neurology, cardiac surgical, vascular surgery and general surgery.

As a Patient Care Technician in our Critical Care department, you will be a key member of the healthcare team at BMC. Under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice, our Patient Care Technicians provide direct clinical and support services. Using our patient-centered care model and uplifted by a supportive nursing organization, you will participate in the delivery of care to our patients and their families. Upon initial contact with patients, visitors, and staff, identifies self as a Patient Care Technician and introduces self to patient by name. Wears appropriate name badge which identifies self as a Patient Care Technician.
Accurately collects and records patient data (vital signs, intake and output, blood sugar, weights, restraint care/monitoring, other) and complies with hospital documentation standards to ensure a complete and accurate patient record.
Interprets & utilizes medical abbreviations and terminology in accordance with hospital policy.
Initiates a prompt response to all patient call lights and seeks assistance from staff members as appropriate.
Makes routine patient room rounds to address patient needs.
Provides and/or assists with basic patient hygiene including but not limited to: basic oral suctioning, bathing, dressing, mouth care, shaving, whirlpool baths, perineal and bowel care, foley care, application of condom catheters, emptying urinals and ostomy bags and other associated hygiene tasks.
Provides basic skin care including but not limited to:, back rubs, routine diabetic foot care, application of non-medicated ointments, application of elastic stockings, ace wraps, and venodynes, turning and repositioning patients every two hours, and other associated tasks.
Sets up patients for meals and assists them with feeding and opening food containers; maintaining calorie counts and recording intake/output measures (I and Os).
Assists nurse/health team members during simple and complex treatments or procedures.
Provides basic preoperative care and readies the patient for the Operating Room in conjunction with the RN.
Collects, labels, and sends/transports specimens with the appropriate lab slips/requisitions.
When ambulating patients using safe and proper technique, applies safety devices using hydraulic lifts or bed scale as needed.
Identifies emergency / crisis situations and initiates appropriate response as directed, including immediate communication of such events to the registered nurse.
Performs basic patient testing, including but not limited to: EKGs and phlebotomy services, tests for guaiac, sugar and acetone, urine pH, glucose finger stick, O2 saturation, leg/girth measurements, visual acuity tests, peak flow tests, etc.
Maintains competence in relation to a variety of other technical skills which may include, but are not limited to:
PD cycler set up
Cast / splint care
Application of external monitors
GU irrigation set up

Addresses patient comfort and information needs by providing informative, non-clinical information to patients and families, orienting patients/visitors to the hospital, unit, patient room services, distributing patient mail/flowers, arranging room to ensure necessary personal care items are available & accessible (includes call lights), distributes nourishments, changes linens & clothing, refill ice packs, run patient errands or other duties as assigned by the RN.
