The inpatient gynecology service for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at BMC includes a clinical team comprised of attending physicians and residents, who work together with the staff nurses, pharmacists, discharge planners and other hospital clinical providers to deliver high quality, efficient medical care, in a setting of outstanding clinical education. We have a busy surgical practice with a full spectrum of surgical procedures including management of gynecologic malignancies, pelvic floor dysfunction, family planning and benign gynecologic conditions. We strive to provide patient centered care rooted in shared decision making with patients for treatment options.
Under the general supervision of a physician, the Gynecology Inpatient and OR Physician Assistant (PA) will support the inpatient gynecology service and function as a first assist in the operating room. This role provides comprehensive care across the continuum of inpatient, emergency, and perioperative gynecologic services. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Obtaining comprehensive medical histories
Performing physical examinations
Rounding on and managing admitted and post-operative gynecology patients
Ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies
Formulating differential diagnoses and treatment plans
Prescribing and/or dispensing medications as appropriate
Coordinating care among interdisciplinary teams
Discharge planning and patient education
Performing inpatient and emergency room consultations
Managing the abnormal pregnancy tracker
Serving as first assist in gynecologic surgical procedures in the operating room
Supporting pre-operative and post-operative care coordination for surgical patients
Participating in surgical case preparation and post-operative follow-up as needed
This role is integral to delivering high-quality, coordinated care to gynecology patients across inpatient and surgical settings.
PA may be involved with a patient's medical care in any role, which the attending physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, hospital regulations, delineation of privileges, and the Physician Assistant's training, knowledge, skill, and experience.
The PA is a valued member of the team participating in the education of the gynecology intern, as well as medical students and PA students during their OB/GYN clerkship.
Minimum qualifications:
PA applicants must hold at least a Bachelor's degree and must be a graduate of a PA Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA) or its predecessor.
PA applicants must be National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA) PANCE eligible and eligible for PA licensure in the State of Massachusetts. Documentation of Massachusetts PA license and initial NCCPA certification are required upon hire.
PA applicants must hold or be eligible to apply for Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration.
Minimum of three years of current physician assistant experience preferred. Prior experience in similar clinical setting/specialty strongly preferred.
Fluency in languages other than English is highly desirable, but not required.

Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Nurse Director, performs a variety of technical and patient care functions that assist the nurses in daily activities. 1. Follows hospital policies and procedures to correctly identify patients prior to transport between nursing units and/or MGH.

3. Maintaining Universal Precautions disinfects stretchers after each patient (railings and mattress).
4. Cleans all stretchers entirely on a weekly basis. Checks stretchers for functional defects, report and red tags for repair. Reports and red tags equipment to charge nurse, Clinical leader, Director to assure that general hospital safety standards are being met.
5. Cleans and prepares patients care areas daily following hospital departmental policies and procedures. These duties include but are not limited to: emptying trash, linen bags, closing and replacing sharps containers, IV pole cleaning, emptying suction canisters, replacing liners, setting up patient care areas as needed to include appropriate equipment for all patient areas
6. Cleans and restocks unit, all nursing carts, restocks all nursing carts according to predetermined inventory levels to assure that adequate patient care supplies are available.
7. Transports blood and blood products to and from MGH Blood Bank following AABB regulations.
8. Always protects patient rights and maintains patient confidentiality.
9. Fill blanket warmer as needed per area if applicable.

The Nursing Assistant performs basic patient care activities as delegated by the registered Nurse, which assist the nursing staff in providing for quality patient care.

Schedule: 40 Hours a week and every other weekend evenings
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Supervised and/or reportable to the following, by job category:
- Patient Care Director or designee
- Registered Nurse
Must be able to collaborate and effectively communicate with Registered Nurses and other health care professionals.
III. Authority:
To give basic patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse, as well as other assigned tasks.
IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."
Performs all patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
Functions in the role of assistant to the nursing staff or to the Registered Nurse.
Performs non-nursing functions which impact and contribute to the quality of patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse.
Provides and maintains a safe and comfortable environment for the patient:
- Assists patients getting in and out of bed.
- Orients patient to call l light and side rails, maintains accessibility and answers call light in a timely fashion.
- Stays with restless patients.
- Makes and instructs in the use of cough pillows.
- Assists in the collection of medical data, vital signs.
Assists the Registered Nurse with specific components of admission, transfer, and discharge of patients:
- Preparation of the unit.
- Transferring patient to bed.
- Assembling patients' belongings.
- Accompanying patients as directed.
Assists the Registered Nurse with ADLs:
- Partial bed baths, assistance with shower and sit baths, as appropriate for patient.
- Fills water pitchers serves nourishments.
- Records intake and output.
Assists with collection of specimens.
Documents vital signs, I&O on appropriate forms.
Disposes of trash and linen on an ongoing basis.
May be required to float, within competencies, to other units, as needed.
Knowledgeable and compliant with infectious diseases policy and procedures: - Appropriately cares for patients on precautions.
- Uses protective measures as deemed appropriate.
- Separates infectious materials and disposes of them appropriately.
Complies with Patient Safety goals as set forth by the medical center.
B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:
Performs related duties as required.
V. Reporting Requirements:
Reports immediately to Patient Care Director or delegate any deviation of normal operations.
Reports immediately to supervisor of an unusual occurrence related to patients, other staff and self.
Reports immediately to the Registered Nurse or delegate of any change in the patients conditions.
Reports to the Patient Care Director, situations that require attention.
Reports all incidents and breaches in quality care to the Patient Care Director and delegate.
VI. Accountability:
Shall be accountable for patient care delivered.
Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital-related, medical staff-related and patient-related data and information. Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant Medical Center Policies and Procedures.
Shall be accountable for observing all policies and procedures of the unit, including Infection Control Policy and Procedures.
VII. Qualifications:
Minimum Education:
High School diploma or equivalency.
Minimum Experience:
Requires previous Nursing Assistant experience preferred or for nursing students, one clinical rotation completed.
Minimum skills/abilities:
Able to communicate verbally and in writing in the English language.
Able to complete mathematical computations required to perform treatment protocols.
Able to lift, transfer and move patients.
Certification/Licensure:
Certified Nursing Assistant Certification required.
BLS required.
