Job Summary The Vazquez-Garcia Lab, part of Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Broad Institute, is seeking exceptional candidates for a postdoctoral position in our interdisciplinary team. Our lab investigates the fundamental principles of somatic evolution and immune surveillance in cancer. We use data-driven approaches to study cellular dynamics in tumors, combining AI/ML, single-cell genomics, and cellular imaging approaches with large clinical datasets and experimental models. Our research draws on multi-modal data from basic science and clinical practice to understand how genomic adaptations confer selective advantages to tumor cells, act as biomarkers of therapeutic response and resistance, and sensitize tumors for targeted intervention. Our ultimate goal is to impact human health and clinical care for patients, leveraging our understanding of cancer trajectories to enable biomarkers and therapeutic strategies that anticipate and overcome tumor progression. You will join a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary group committed to tackle challenging problems in computational oncology. You will work on independent research projects within the lab, and actively collaborate with colleagues across MGH, HMS, the Broad Institute and other institutions. You will be part of a vibrant scientific community and will have access to state-of-the-art computational resources and high-throughput genomics technologies. The main responsibilities will include but not be limited to: ● Design, train, and evaluate cutting-edge AI and statistical models using large patient datasets. ● Build robust pipelines for large-scale data processing and benchmarking across modalities. ● Collaborate closely with cancer biologists, clinicians, and other computational researchers to generate testable hypotheses and interpret findings. ● Perform exploratory research in a fast-paced setting with the potential for real impact on patients. ● Contribute to the development of high-quality, reusable, open-source software. ● Publish research in top-tier journals and present at major conferences. ● Help foster a collaborative lab environment by advising and supporting junior team members. Qualifications Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. (or near completion) in a relevant field such as Computational Biology, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline. Demonstrated proficiency in Python, R and/or other scientific computing languages. Proven track record of productivity through peer-reviewed publications. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Preferred experience: Proven experience working with high-dimensional, multi-modal omics data and clinical data. Strong background in advanced statistical modeling and/or modern machine learning approaches (e.g. transformers, foundation models, generative modeling, interpretable AI). Knowledge of cancer biology, immunology, or molecular biology. Familiarity with cloud computing and workflow management (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake). The Blum Lab aims to develop safer and more effective immunotherapy strategies for patients with solid tumors. Using patient samples, systems immunology approaches, and disease-relevant models, the lab will investigate the cellular and molecular drivers of treatment toxicity and resistance. Current efforts focus on two major challenges: 1. Understanding immune-related adverse events (ir AEs) and their relationship to anti-tumor immunity in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors. 2. Investigating peritoneal metastases and malignant ascites, a common complication of advanced cancers associated with poor survival. Initial projects are particularly focused on patients with gastric and esophageal cancers. Our long-term goal is to uncover broadly applicable principles that inspire new therapeutic strategies and improve clinical care by maximizing anti-tumor immunity while minimizing harm. The Blum Lab is located in a state-of-the-art research building on the main MGH campus, surrounded by world-class investigators across multiple disciplines. The lab is affiliated with the MGH Department of Medicine, the MGH Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School, and the Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard, providing access to cutting-edge technologies and opportunities for collaboration across Boston's vibrant biomedical community. The work is both with mouse models and with human samples (maternal and cord blood, placenta, breastmilk, among others). Our laboratory performs highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary research that spans the fields of developmental biology, immunology, infectious diseases, metabolism, and neuroscience. The Research Technician reports directly to the Principal Investigator and is expected to work independently on assigned research with guidance from a higher-level lab member (e.g. Research Scientist, Postdoctoral Fellow) and/or the Principal Investigator. Experience with tissue dissection and preservation for RNA and immunohistochemical analyses, molecular techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction from tissues, and tissue sectioning and staining is preferred but not required. The Technician will assist with the laboratory's ongoing research projects studying the neurodevelopmental and metabolic programming effects of immune activation (via obesity, high-fat diet and/or viral infection) in pregnancy and lactation, using both mice and mouse tissues, and samples from human research participants (examining impacts of both viral infection and/or vaccination in pregnancy). With broad guidance from the supervisor, the Technician will learn to independently perform experiments to accomplish laboratory research goals. Additional Job Details (if applicable) We are seeking a motivated and detail-orientated research technician to join the Genomics Platform at The Gene Lay Institute of Immunology and Inflammation of Brigham and Woman's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. The Institute aims to understand the immunologic mechanisms behind inflammatory diseases, cancer, and aging with the ultimate goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets. The Genomics Platform offers a range of next generation sequencing and spatial omics technologies and services, and utilizes state of the art robotics systems and the latest technologies and methods to generate high-quality, comprehensive genomics data. This position will work closely with the Platform Manager, Project Manager, and Data Manager to assist in data generation and processing, as well as maintain laboratory equipment and support experimental workflows. Looking for an applicant with molecular biology experience and strong organizational skills/attention to detail. This position will directly interface with researchers and requires strong communication skills. This position involves extensive training at the initial stage, and hence requires a two-year commitment minimum. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: * Under supervision of or assisting the Platform Manager, provide next generation sequencing and spatial transcriptomics services, including single cell and bulk RNA-sequencing library preparation, spatial omics, and other workflows as needed. * Carefully maintain records/logs of Genomics Platform projects. This includes sample tracking, archiving, and storage. * After proper training, perform sectioning, staining, and histology quality control for spatial omics projects. * Perform in vitro and in vivo experiments run by the Genomics Platform. * Maintain all equipment within the Platform to keep them in good working order. Work with vendors to schedule preventative maintenance visits and coordinate all repairs needed for the equipment. * Track inventory, order supplies, receive and log orders to maintain adequate stock of Genomics Platform consumables. * Serve as the emergency response personnel required to respond to equipment failure during off hours. (e.g. freezer failure). * Performs all other duties as directed by the Platform Director, Manager, and Project Manager. Preferred Skills: * High degree of computer literacy. * Sound analytical and organizational skills. * Good oral and written communication skills. * Must be able to logically and effectively structure tasks and set priorities.
