MassBay Community College company history timeline

1961

Massachusetts Bay Community College was chartered in February 1961 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as one of the first community colleges in Massachusetts.

Founded in 1961, MassBay is one of 15 publicly funded community colleges in Massachusetts and is fully accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education - NECHE (formerly NEASC) and program-specific national accrediting bodies.

1973

In 1973, after residing in temporary locations in Boston and Watertown, the Massachusetts Board of Regional Community Colleges chose the property of the Elizateth Seton High School in Wellesley Hills for MassBay’s permanent campus, with a maximum enrollment of 1500 FTEs.

1975

In 1975, the college moved to its permanent location in Wellesley Hills, on the campus of the former Elizabeth Seton High School.

1978

In 1978, the Board of Regents charged the College with the development of a new mission emphasizing program initiatives in advanced technology and the health sciences.

1983

In 1983, founding president John F. McKenzie retired, and second president Roger A. Van Winkle was appointed.

2001

In 2001, MassBay opened its Automotive Technology Center in Ashland.

2003

In 2003, the Recreation and Wellness Center was opened.

2011

In 2011, the College marked its 50th anniversary.

2015

In 2015, Yves Salomon-Fernandez, Ph.D. was appointed the interim president of MassBay Community College until a sixth president was chosen.

In 2015, Three Massachusetts Bay Community College students were the recipients of the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship, the largest and most prestigious scholarship for community college students in the country.

2016

In 2016, David Podell, Ph.D. became the sixth president of Massachusetts Bay Community College.
