Strine, 81, said he started work at the facility in 1976 as chief financial officer and later served as CEO for 10 or 11 years, when the hospital was a nonprofit operation.
City Hospital became Massillon Community Hospital in 1978.
The school closed in 1986, which was two decades before the hospital was renamed Affinity Medical Center.
In 1999, Akron General Health System purchased the medical facility for $8 million.
2003: Massillon Community Hospital and Doctors Hospital in Perry Township start discussing collaboration.
Affinity was formed in February 2006 through a joint venture by Massillon Community Hospital’s owner, Akron General Health System, and Doctors Hospital’s former owner, the for-profit Triad Hospitals Inc.
2008: Affinity closes Doctors and consolidates all services at the Massillon campus.
The merger deal between Massillon Community and Doctors hospitals required some medical services to remain in Massillon until at least 2011.
Quorum is a publicly traded company spun off of for-profit Community Health Systems in 2015.
*UPDATE 2016: The Massillon State Hospital admission records do exist in the collection of the Ohio History Connection, but are sealed to the public and may only be accessed by close relatives, but are available after that person has been gone for 50 years.
2018: Affinity workers learn the hospital will stop admitting patients Jan.
