Job Requirements:

* Hold or qualify for CA Child Development Master Teacher permit or higher (24 units in ECE)
* Possess leadership skills, strong initiative and ability to motivate children
* Organized, written communication and problem solving skills.
* Ability to of provide supportive, creative, consistent and professional supervision for program participants.
* High School diploma or equivalent
* Must be at least 18 years of age
* Must meet state requirements for education and additional center/school requirements may apply.

1. Candidates must have an Associates/Bachelor's degree in early childhood education or child development; or an Associates/Bachelor's degree in a related field.
2. Child Development Permit at the Teacher level or above; or provide original "Verification of Completion Form (41-CDP1)" completed by an approve VOC agency.
3. CLASS Certified.

Head Start Master Teacher is required to:

• Provide feedback in a supportive, instructive and non-judgmental way; enhancing the ability of teaching staff to observe children's activities and experiences as part of the ongoing assessment process and to use this information to individualize the curriculum.
• Evaluate classroom quality using the Early Childhood Education Rating Scale (ECERS) and other assessment tools.
• Provide opportunities for children to use their creative abilities, and to explore and experiment with a variety of media through art, music, drama in all aspects of the program.
• Maintain a vibrant, well-arranged and orderly classroom; develops a plan to ensure the safety of the children while they are using indoor and outdoor facilities.
• Inspect facilities for hazardous conditions, unsafe equipment and materials; follows an emergency exit plan and conducts monthly emergency exit drills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver's license, motor vehicle and evidence of automobile liability insurance. Meet State health requirements including passing a physical examination as a condition of employment, and provide verification of a TB clearance at the time of employment. CPR and Basic First Aid certificate. Fingerprints must be on file with the Justice Department.

Program Summary

The Children and Family Services programs include Head Start, Early Head Start, State Pre-Kindergarten, Home Based Services, and Developmental Play Groups. Over 900 children birth through kindergarten entry and 32 expectant parents and their families receive child development and comprehensive family services through the Unity Council. The programs are diverse, multilingual, developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive, and individualized for each child and family services are provided in seven centers and one home-based program throughout Oakland and Monument Corridor neighborhood in Concord, CA.

Position Summary

Under the guidance of the Center Director, the Master Teacher provides quality primary care giving for preschool aged children in a safe and supervised early care and education setting. Promotes the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Head Start children enrolled in the program.

Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Plan and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum;
• Collaborate and lead a team on developing and implementing daily lesson plans;
• Ensure that all children’s assessments, home visits, parent teacher conferences and Individual Plans are completed in a timely manner;
• Conduct assessments, develop individual development plans and record ongoing observations of children in assigned groups;
• Prepare and conduct parent-teacher conferences for each child in the assigned group according to schedule of requirements;
• Conduct home visits for each child in the assigned group according to schedule of requirements;
• Ensures the classroom team utilizes appropriate curriculum materials and routines to promote an environment conductive to appropriate levels of development, interests, and specific needs of the children;
• Maintain effective and professional relationships with enrolled families and other colleagues;
• Complete evaluations in conjunction with assigned Center Director;
• Provide overall leadership and support in the classroom for its other teachers and serve as the lead decision-maker in conjunction with Center Director;
• Ensures the classroom team develops and maintains a safe and healthy classroom environment in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards, Title 5, and Title 22 Regulations;
• Provides support, guidance and supervision to Teachers and Associate Teachers, as assigned;
• Serve as a mentor teacher for staff who are taking a practicum course by providing oversight and completing forms and other paperwork as required for the course;
• Enter education data into Child Plus for classroom, including uploading documents to child’s electronic file;
• Attend regular staff meetings as scheduled by Center Director and Management;
• Complete a minimum of 21 hours of Professional Development annually;
• Perform additional duties as assigned by Center Director and Management.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years teaching experience and a minimum of 2 years’ experience working with preschool children;
• One year administrative and supervision experience, preferably at a childcare center;
• Familiarity with administrative procedures (prior Head Start experience preferred);
• Ability to work harmoniously in a multicultural team;
• Caring, compassionate approach to working with children and families as well as maintaining an open, friendly and cooperative relationship with each child’s family;
• Bilingual Spanish/English or Asian Language/English preferred;
• Awareness of safe lifting techniques for lifting children, supplies and furnishings and commitment to using preventive health measures in the classroom to prevent the spread of disease.

Requirements

• Master Teacher Permit or higher from Commission on Teacher Credentialing;
• AA or BA Degree in Child Development or related field preferred;
• Must have supervised field experience;
• 6 Infant/Toddler units preferred; or willingness to obtain 6 Infant/Toddler units within first year of hire.

Physical Requirements

Must be able climb stairs, reach, bend, lift 20-30 pounds, crawl, kneel, stoop, twist, grasp with hands and fingers materials, use arms and legs, able to walk, climb ladders if applicable.
