Saint-Gobain Research North America is looking for driven, talented, and energetic researchers to join our current team in conducting hands-on laboratory experiments for key development programs. As a Research Engineer II, the candidate will investigate, research, and develop new competencies to help improve processes and products for different businesses within Saint-Gobain. The job will involve interaction with customers and understanding their analytical needs, measurement and analysis of sample data and providing solutions to customers based on a thorough understanding of materials science principles.

Majority of the job will involve solving complex materials related problems using optical and SEM/EDS/EBSD analysis in the microscopy laboratory, managing equipment maintenance and repair, developing new methodologies and timely documentation of results, procedures and new techniques.

Additionally, part of the time will be spent on helping optical profilometry laboratory to assist data acquisition, analysis and reporting.

The candidate will be expected to collaborate effectively with R&D colleagues and external customers, design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and present findings in written and oral formats. In addition to the candidate's primary projects, the candidate will be expected to support projects led by others.
In addition to the above, the candidate will need to:

* Possess extensive and thorough technical knowledge in the relevant analytical area and a fundamental understanding of the structure and properties of materials.
* Handle the regular operations of optical/SEM/EDS/EBSD and support the optical profilometry lab with minimal assistance and guidance on administrative aspects of role.
* Maintain a clean and safe environment in the lab in accordance with Saint-Gobain EHS policies and procedures.
* Interact effectively with customers to understand their requirements and suggest possible analytical solutions from a materials engineer perspective.
* Communicate results to customers in a timely manner by submitting clear and concise reports.
* Ensure regular maintenance of equipment and manage the communication with service vendors for repair.
* Stay aware of advancing technologies and equipment in the area, and propose for capex when the need and budget fit.
* Develop novel techniques that enhance the capabilities of the lab, thereby providing customers with more options.
* Regularly document new methods and procedures as technical reports or SOPs.
* Manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously, on time, well documented and within budget to meet customer objectives.
* Demonstrate open approach in all areas of responsibility, be a team player and able to collaborate with people with different background and technical levels.

Required Qualifications

* BS Degree with a minimum of 3+ years' experience or MS Degree with a thesis, in Material Science, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or other related disciplines.

Responsible for engineering advancements directed at materials selection, application of engineering materials, material alternatives and evaluations pertinent to product objectives and opportunities. The role entails management of applied materials engineering projects driven by multiple objectives, prediction of behaviors under various environmental and service conditions, functional-economical optimizations, and sustainability measures in alignment with company strategies. WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Demonstrate new materials technology applications to realize betterment of product service life, achievement of technical objectives, promoting reduced environmental impacts, and offering cost-benefit objectives.
Lead materials selection and provide subject matter expertise for new concepts and alternatives including factors of product function, part shape, manufacturing operations, materials properties, usage costs, timing, and other screening criteria.
Define methods of test, coordinate the implementation of experiments, evaluate test results, and prepare reports of research findings relative to materials investigations.
Operationally lead Materials Laboratory ensuring general capabilities for mechanical and chemical measurements, microscopic assessment, and failure analysis.
Conduct assessment of base materials (e.g. steel, porcelain-enamel, polymer resin, insulation) as-received/as-manufactured mechanical properties to evaluate relevant component level performance comparisons.
Provide technical guidance to personnel supporting projects. Share engineering information and promote open dialogue, Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments.
Document technical data generated for the assigned projects for knowledge sharing and best practices guidance.
Represent company in technical societies and keep the company advised of pertinent technological developments.

Qualifications WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Master's degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering disciplines.
5-8 years of related experience in applied materials research, materials selection, materials coating, performance validation and service life prediction; analyses of fatigue, corrosion, oxidation, wear, or other degradation mechanisms avoidance.
Hands on experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team among design, manufacturing, and quality functions, in application of a standardized product development process, to achieve commercialized products.
Working knowledge of statistical methods, Design-of-Experiments (DOE), and reliability engineering principles.
Working knowledge of design sprints and agile development methods to accelerate discovery of opportunities and inform technology projects involving materials considerations.

Battelle's National Security Business Unit is currently seeking candidates for a full time, permanent position as a Chemistry and Materials Researcher to provide support to government programs focused on Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) efforts in in the Advanced Materials and Energetics Division. This is a hands-on, bench chemist position located in Columbus, OH with expected regular travel and interaction with staff at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida.
Active areas of research include, but are not limited to:

Firefighting agent formulations including dispersal techniques and equipment and new fire suppression agents and technologies
De-icing and anti-icing fluid formulations
Coal-based chemicals and conversion chemistry

Responsibilities
Performs RDT&E of moderate complexity by compiling and evaluating design and test data, preparing technical specifications, analyzing technical data to determine appropriate limits and variables for product, process, or materials specifications
Designs experimentation procedures for evaluation of fire extinguishment formulations, including data collection from small scale laboratory testing
Presents findings via technical reports
Performs standardized chemical analysis of firefighting agents

Key Qualifications
BS Chemistry (3-5 years' of experience), MS with at least 2 years' experience or PhD
Experience in organic chemical synthesis, purification and characterization techniques with familiarity of polymer materials and polymer synthesis performed at small scale up to kilogram scale
Knowledge/experience with the use and application of various analytical techniques for problem solving
Knowledge/experience with a wide range of solvents and surfactants
Proactive, self-starter who can work independently and in a team environment
Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Travel up to 15%

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of formulation chemistry for industrial and consumer products, with preferred working knowledge of fire extinguishment chemistry
Ability to translate bench-scale techniques to pre-pilot scale production
