1931

1931 - Capitalized with $500, Brush Beryllium Company was incorporated on January 9, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio.

1933

1933 - With the first sale of beryllium oxide materials for use in radio tubes and other applications, the company recorded sales of $12,241.

1934

1934 - The first sale of copper beryllium was made to the American Brass Company.

1936

1936 – Sales of copper beryllium grow to $65,000; Sales of copper beryllium enabled Brush to work on perfecting production of pure beryllium.

1970

1970 – Sales reach $40.9 million as Brush begins to target the auto industry and the mainframe computer industry for ceramics and copper-based alloys.

1971

1971 – Brush Beryllium makes its first major acquisition and purchases Wellman division of Abex Corp. (producer of friction materials) and forms S.K. Wellman; Shareholders vote to change the Brush Beryllium name to Brush Wellman.

1972

1972 – Brush listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

1974

1974 – Automakers in North America, Europe and Japan begin using beryllia ceramics in electronic ignition systems which led to a 20% improvement in vehicle fuel economy.

1998

Ever ExpandingIn 1998, WAM acquired the Wheatfield, New York facility.

2001

To further the expansion of microelectronic packaging offerings, in 2001 WAM acquired a company with locations in Mount Vernon, New York and Subic Bay, Philippines.

2004

Global DevelopmentContinuing their quest to be a truly global company, a location in Taiwan was added in 2004 to serve key Taiwanese markets and provide an entry into mainland China.

2005

WAM expanded the shield cleaning business to Limerick, Ireland in 2005.

2006

In 2006, CERAC, Inc. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was acquired and broadened WAM’s technology reach.

2010

2010 – New beryllium pebble plant opens at the Elmore facility completed under an innovative private-public, cost-sharing partnership with the United States Department of Defense.

2011

2011 – Materion acquires Shanghai-based EIS Optics.

Incorporated as a public company in 2011(NYSE: MTRN), it combines the expertise and resources of Williams Advanced Materials, CERAC, Academy Corporation, OMC and Zentrix Technologies.

2012

Shares begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the new symbol: MTRN. 2012 – Materion acquired Aerospace Metal Composites Limited (AMC) of Farnborough, England.

2017

2017 – Materion acquired the target materials business of the Heraeus Group, of Hanau, Germany.

2019

2020

2020 - Materion acquired Optics Balzers, maker of thin-film optical coatings.

2021
