POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate mathematics teacher for English Language Learners (ELL) for middle and high school levels at the Billings Multilingual Academy. The ideal candidate will be committed to providing high-quality instruction and support to students who are learning English as an additional language, particularly in the context of mathematics. The ELL Teacher will collaborate with colleagues to develop and implement effective instructional strategies tailored to meet the diverse needs of English Language Learners in mathematics. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on the academic and linguistic development of students from diverse cultural backgrounds within the realm of mathematics education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor's degree in Mathematics Education with a valid, or eligible for, Montana teaching license for Grades 5-12 (Master's degree preferred but not required).
2. Preference will be given for additional credentials in TESOL, Linguistics, ESL, Bilingual Education, or a related field.
3. Preference will be given for those with experience working with English Language Learners in a middle or high school educational setting, with a focus on mathematics instruction.
4. Knowledge of second language acquisition theories & models, best practices in language teaching, and cultural competency as they relate to mathematics education.
5. Strong instructional planning and classroom management skills, particularly in the context of mathematics instruction.
6. Ability to differentiate mathematics instruction to meet the diverse needs of English Language Learners from newcomers to emergent and long-term ELs.
7. Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
8. Commitment to responsive teaching practices within the context of mathematics education.
9. Fluency in a second language (preferred).
10. Experience with instructional technology and digital resources for mathematics instruction and language learning (preferred).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Design and deliver engaging and differentiated mathematics instruction to English Language Learners in middle and high school, considering various proficiency levels and mathematical concepts, ensuring alignment with state standards and educational best practices.
2. Develop and implement individualized learning plans for ELL students with diverse linguistic and academic needs in mathematics, including those with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE).
3. Provide language and mathematics content support to ELL students in mainstream mathematics classrooms through co-teaching, push-in, or pull-out models, ensuring that language barriers do not hinder mathematical understanding and application.
4. Assess students' language proficiency and mathematical understanding using appropriate formative and summative assessment tools, and use data to inform instructional planning and decision-making in mathematics.
5. Collaborate with other teachers, administrators, and support staff to ensure the integration of language development and mathematics instruction across the middle and high school curriculum.
6. Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment that values cultural diversity and promotes students' linguistic and growth within the context of mathematics education.
7. Communicate effectively with students, families, and stakeholders, providing regular updates on students' progress and offering resources and support for English language and mathematics development at home.
8. Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in the field of mathematics education for English language learners and multicultural education.
9. Stay current with research and trends in second language acquisition, culturally responsive teaching, and educational technology as they relate to mathematics education, and apply findings to improve instructional practices.
10. Collaborate with colleagues to develop and implement school-wide initiatives to support English Language Learners and promote equity and diversity in the middle and high school community.
