History Teaching Faculty
The History Department at JLA will provide students with a strong foundation in the essential subject matter of ancient, American, and World History. Additionally, students will have exposure to civics and economics in upper school. Students will eventually have the opportunity to take electives in the social sciences that might include topics such as History of the Middle East, Modern Jewish History, History of the Americas, Art History, Psychology, Economics, Sociology, and Human Geography. The focus of the history courses will be to foster critical thinking and depth over breadth. The priority is for students to make connections between countries, cultures, conflicts, and the world today, rather than memorize content. Ideally, social science classes should illuminate the connection between history and the issues of our contemporary society and should hopefully inspire students to get civically involved in their communities.
All classes will be held at an honors level with an option to pursue the same subject at an advanced level. Pedagogical approaches will include Harkness discussions and project-based learning in addition to both traditional and authentic assessments. Evidence-based writing will be a key component of history instruction.
Responsibilities
Full-time employment for faculty teaching positions will commence in August 2025. Responsibilities will include:
20 teaching periods per week (5 periods daily M-Th)
Advisory, media literacy, research, service learning, or mentorship role as part of our unique Friday schedule.
Tutorial sessions twice weekly
Robust professional development throughout the year
Special onboarding and leadership programming with students for the first 3 weeks of the school year
Qualifications
Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience at the middle/upper school level, as well as a strong foundation in classroom pedagogy. He/She must have an undergraduate degree in a related field, though advanced degrees are preferred. Experience working with gifted and talented students is an asset.

We are seeking an energetic and creative Middle School & High School Language Arts Teacher to join our growing faculty for the 2025-2026 school year. This position requires in-person teaching on campus.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement a Language Arts curriculum that focuses on developing strong readers, writers, and critical thinkers and exposes students to a range of literature representing diverse backgrounds, cultures, and voices.
Guide 8th-grade students through their high school application process, including writing letters of recommendation and providing individualized academic support.
Develop and implement a culturally responsive curriculum for either a middle school and high school arts elective or middle school and high school advisory class for students at varying levels of progress from grades 6 through 12. This includes creating schemes of work and lesson plans, identifying, and selecting instructional resources and methods to meet students' needs, and preparing the classroom for activities.
Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development and on enhancing instructional practices and strategies.
Regularly assess students' progress by observing and evaluating performance and development, assigning and grading classwork, homework, tests, and assignments, and providing appropriate feedback to students, their parents, and colleagues.
Communicate regularly with the relevant people (learning support specialist, counselor, principals, and parents) about student progress.
Establish and enforce school rules for students with a positive style and strong classroom management skills.
