PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Position Overview:
Horizons is seeking a Co-Teacher with an interest in working with youth and willingness to learn and implement best practices in youth development in a summer program setting. We are looking for a passionate, caring near-peer who will work as a team player to fulfill the Horizons mission, and support a joyous, inclusive, inspiring and educational culture. The Co-Teacher will work under the supervision of a Lead Teacher and other program specialists, and alongside youth volunteers. It is our hope that Horizons summer staff members will return to the program for more than one summer as we continue to work together, support our students, and build the program and the community.
Essential Job Functions:
The Co-Teacher will
Be an assistant to the Horizons Lead Teacher. In partnership with the Lead Teacher, maintain a safe environment for students throughout the summer.
Aid in the classroom duties of teaching and caring for approximately 16 students during a six week summer enrichment program.
Be responsible for assisting with maintaining a daily classroom schedule and assisting in instruction.
Work in partnership with approximately 2 volunteers in the classroom each day.
Attend swim instruction lessons with students providing encouragement and participating as possible.
Attend and assist with supervision of clubs, weekly field trips, including outdoor activities and traveling by school bus to off site locations.
Plan and execute special activities for students including but not limited to story time, art, sports, or other recreational or creative opportunities.
Assist with classroom set up, clean up and other duties as assigned by their direct supervisor.
Qualifications:
In addition to a strong commitment to Horizon's mission, this position requires a willingness to work with youth and participate in summer program activities. The ideal candidate must be enthusiastic, patient, caring and responsible.
A minimum of 15 years of age by May 1st and able to obtain a Work Permit (if under 16)
A strong desire to work with youth in a summer program setting
References are required for this position
Completion of pre-summer program training both online and in person is required.
Physical Aspects of the position:
Additional physical requirements of this position could be endurance, including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and summer program activities; requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs; and daily exposure to the sun, heat, and bugs.
The position is seasonal employment.
