Max & Erma's company history timeline

1972

In 1972, the 36-year-old purchased a local bar and restaurant from longtime owners Max and Erma Visconik.

1982

By the time the chain went public in 1982, it boasted ten locations in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, and annual revenues of over $12.5 million.

1986

That changed with the 1986 ouster of founder and CEO Barry Zacks.

1988

1988: Todd B. Barnum announces Max & Erma's will try franchising its concept on a trial basis with Parke Hotel Management Corp. of Columbus for two sites, one in the Akron-Cleveland area and one in the Cincinnati area.

1990

He expressed his confidence in the company's continuing viability in Raffio's 1990 article, asserting that "No matter how terrible things got financially for us, there were still a lot of people having a great time at our restaurants.

2007

10, 2007: Michael Nahkunst is hired as Max & Erma's new chief operating officer.Sept.

19, 2007: Chairman and CEO Todd Barnum retires and steps down immediately, although he will remain on the company's board of directors as a nonexecutive chairman.

2008
